Based out of our office in Calgary, Edmonton, Burnaby (or other areas in the Lower Mainland), or a home office, you’ll join our Vegetation Team and work as part of multidisciplinary project teams associated with our Western Canada offices to contribute to the environmental planning and permitting efforts of government and privately owned infrastructure projects. The work will include field data collection, writing technical reports, and regulatory applications. This position will start in the spring with an anticipated 80% of travel for fieldwork and 20% office work. A successful offer will be full-time or a 12-month contract depending on workload and/or skillset. Contracts have the potential for extension or conversion to full-time.

Here's what you'll need

  • B.Sc. in biology, related to botany, ecology, environmental sciences, an equivalent post-secondary diploma, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Vascular plant identification skills sufficient to be the lead team member on rare plant surveys, including challenging groups such as grasses, sedges, and willows.
  • 2-5 years of relevant professional experience conducting vegetation surveys, ideally involving rare plants.
  • Strong field skills and willingness to work in remote field locations for extended periods of time.
  • Aerial imagery interpretation experience, either within a web browser or a desktop-based digital platform.
  • A strong safety culture.
  • A driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.

Ideally, You'll Also Have

  • An understanding of ecological land classification (e.g., ELC, or Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping [TEM]) and wetland classification schemas; experience conducting TEM plot surveys would be an asset.
  • Experience completing various pre- and post-construction reclamation assessments (e.g., Detailed Site Assessments, Post-construction Reclamation Assessments) throughout Western Canada.
  • Knowledge of common soil characteristics and classification.
  • Experience viewing and/or collecting field data using a mobile app (e.g., Esri Field Maps or Survey 123).
  • Experience viewing and/or reviewing digitally collected field data in a web browser or desktop-based digital solution.
  • Relevant professional experience in environmental consulting or a related field.
  • Familiarity with ecological communities in Western Canada, particularly northern, coastal, and interior BC, and boreal, parkland, and grassland AB.
  • P.Biol. or R.P.Bio. designation or be working towards such designation. Biologist in Training may be considered.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience or interest in supporting other biophysical study areas such as wetlands, wildlife, soils, and/or fisheries field assessments.
  • Experience working with linear development construction programs.
  • Bryophyte or lichen identification skills are not required but are considered an asset.

66,300.00

Posted Salary Range Upper

103,575.00

The base salary range for this position is $66,300.00 to $103,575.00. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across British Columbia, Canada locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
