Position Overview:

We are looking for an Optomechanical Engineer to join the Diagnostics team at General Fusion. The successful applicant will develop, design, implement, and maintain optical diagnostics on General Fusion’s experimental testbeds. These optical diagnostics, including systems for imaging and systems to measure plasma properties, are commonly located in or near harsh environmental conditions. The successful candidate will take ownership of one or more diagnostics technologies and/or provide optomechanical engineering support to optical diagnostics. This position is primarily on-site in Richmond, BC, with some flexibility for hybrid work.

Responsibilities:

  • Design imaging and non-imaging optical systems for harsh environmental conditions of restrictive spaces, high temperature, high vacuum, high voltage, and electrical noise
  • Design, procure, assemble, and test prototypes for optical diagnostic equipment
  • Interface with appropriate teams (likely Mechanical, Controls, Data Systems) to realize complete diagnostic systems on integrated testbeds.
  • Install, calibrate, and commission new optical diagnostic equipment
  • Develop and document procedures for assembly, installation, calibration, and operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, design, test, and implement diagnostic improvements to provide better system measurements and/or reliability
  • Thoroughly document and communicate designs and results
  • Collaborate within the organization to attain company goals
  • Maintain a clean, organized lab, shop and workspace
  • Prioritize personal and co-worker safety
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years (minimum 5 years preferred) of relevant work experience, or MSc degree, in optical engineering, physics, engineering physics, or equivalent program.
  • Extensive experience with Zemax or equivalent optical design software
  • Experience in design and hands-on construction of optical instrumentation in research or industrial settings
  • Experience with optoelectronics (detectors, cameras)
  • Experience in mechanical design using SolidWorks or similar CAD software and producing machine drawings
  • Ability to consult, manage, and execute multi-disciplinary projects in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work efficiently and adapt in a fast-paced research and development environment
  • Ability to identify, prioritize, and execute work independently
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work well within a team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Hands-on experience with lasers or fiber optics systems preferred
    • Experience in plasma diagnostics, spectroscopy, interferometry, or advanced imaging modalities preferred
    • Experience in design for extreme environmental conditions of plasma, high temperature, and/or high temperature preferred
    • Experience with data acquisition hardware, signal processing, EM noise treatment, and vibration isolation and compensation techniques preferred
    • Experience with 3D printing preferred
    • Experience in Python or other coding languages (MATLAB, C++, C#) preferred
    • Machine shop (lathe, mill, waterjet) experience preferred

The typical hiring range for this position is $75,000 - $100,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
