Position: Junior Accountant

Reports to: Controller

Position Description:

Under the direction of the Controller, the Junior Accountant provides support to the Finance team by managing daily accounting tasks. This is an entry level position. The Junior Accountant understands accounting principles and is able to work comfortably with numbers and attention to detail. Your accounting, organization and interpersonal skills will make a significant contribution to the overall efficiency of the Finance team.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

In this role the Junior Accountant will provide valuable assistance to the other Finance team members, such as:

  • Verification, control, custody and deposit of daily admission receipts and other retail sales on a frequent, regular and timely basis
  • Ensure safe handling of cash floats including maintenance and reconciliation
  • General accounting duties such as account reconciliations, journal entries, attendance reporting and donations receipt reconciliation
  • Perform reconciliations on daily sales receipts including credit cards
  • Record and Reconcile gift cards and donations
  • Perform accounts receivable duties including issuing invoices, contact customers and prepare bank deposits
  • Investigate credit card chargebacks and log investigation results
  • Analysis of financial data to assist with grant applications and other projects as required
  • Organize, record and track contracts and other corporate records
  • Provide support to Purchasing and Accounts Payable as needed
  • Provide support for the interim and annual audit
  • Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Important Availability Commitment:

This position requires working on-site Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. There may be some overtime requirements during peak periods, such as year-end audit.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year Accounting Diploma program at a recognized college or university
  • Previous experience in cash handling
  • Previous experience in recording transactions and performing reconciliations in a high volume environment
  • Good understanding of accounting knowledge (debits and credits) and experience in preparing journal entries
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work within deadlines
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving skills and critical thinking
  • Effective customer service, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and flexibility
  • Must be able to work effectively independently as well as with teams
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel. Familiarity with Sage 300 and Windows preferred

This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $24.99/hour.
