Regular hours of work are between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight. Full-Time: 80 hours/2 weeks; Seven (7) days a week. Part-Time: Up to 24 hours/week; Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs, this position is involved in a diverse range of job activities including assisting with ice maintenance, record keeping, general building repair, special event set up and take down, and custodial duties. Overall, the Temporary Worker - Arenas position is responsible for assisting to ensure that all facilities and equipment are safe, ready for use, as well as efficiently and effectively operated for the convenience and enjoyment of patrons and the public. Specifically, the Temporary Worker - Arena position aids in day-to-day maintenance for corporate owned and/or operated facilities consistent with corporate and department standard operating procedures. Assigned work locations may include the Joe Thornton Community Centre and Memorial Arena.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Custodial and Maintenance
Assists other arena staff with the ongoing maintenance and operation of the facility. Responsible to carry out all daily, weekly and monthly housekeeping/facility maintenance requirements in accordance with prescribed departmental standards and procedures while ensuring accurate documentation is maintained in logbooks (daily maintenance binder and caretaker logs). Performs general care taking and maintenance duties in the overall facility such as cleaning floors, wet mopping, operating power cleaning equipment, cleaning glass, painting, replacing light bulbs, making minor repairs, collection and disposing of garbage both inside and outside of the facility. Assists with the cleaning of the interior and exterior of the facility including seating areas, change rooms, glass doors, arena glass, offices, gymnasiums, community halls, meetings rooms and washrooms. Communicates and assists with the maintenance of proper ice conditions and facility standards for ice and facility user groups including moving nets during ice flooding. Maintains washrooms, change rooms and associated areas daily in a sanitary condition including cleaning, disinfecting, removing garbage and replenishing supplies of toilet paper, soap, etc. Operates small tools/equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Assists in hall and gymnasium set-ups. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Customer Service and Communication Skills
Interacts and provides courteous and professional customer service to facility patrons and internal partners. Promptly reports all safety, program and participant issues to Operations staff or the Supervisor. Ensures that facility users act in an orderly fashion and follow facility rules, report problems to the Operations staff or the Supervisor. Responds to routine inquiries related to the use of the facility. Records and maintains accurate records of test and related equipment performance in appropriate logbooks. Maintains appropriate written work records including incidents and accident reports, time sheets and other documentation and sign off as required.
Health and Safety
Assists with ensuring safe access and exit to the facility by ensuring all entrances, walkways and exit doors are free of ice, snow or other debris. Responds to emergency clean ups and spills. Note: The major tasks and responsibilities outlined above are representative but not all-inclusive. All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition. This position must be compliant with all provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related to “Duties of a Worker.”
Education/Experience/Skill
Experience in the use of hand and power tools and/or previous experience working in an arena/recreation facility Must possess good team skills. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to deal with internal and external contacts in a courteous and efficient manner. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Can work independently and accomplish tasks and assignments. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies. Must have the physical capability to carry out the essential duties of the position. Must be able to perform physically repetitive work (ie. lifting, bending, climbing ladders, pushing and pulling with moderate exertion.) Flexibility is a must, as shift assignments may change depending on facility demands and staff availability (shifts to be scheduled between 8am and midnight; shift lengths vary from 4 hours to 8 hours).
Knowledge/Skill/Abilities
Knowledge of facility operations. Ability to operate commercial vehicles, small power tools, radio communications equipment and other specialized seasonal maintenance equipment. Must demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to work as an effective team member including the ability to work with limited supervision. Must be computer literate including knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Ability to exchange information, receive and understand instructions. Ability to provide general information to facility patrons and the public and assist them with their concerns and complaints when possible.
Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
Other Must possess a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and access to reliable transportation.
Ontario Driver’s Abstract required
Shifts may take place at Joe Thornton Community Centre (JTCC) or Memorial Arena depending on staffing requirements.
Valid First Aid/CPR
Satisfactory Police Records Check Uniform requirements: steel-toed boots are mandatory, plain navy blue shirt / t-shirt / hoodie (no logos), navy pants, navy jacket (if already owned), ball cap is acceptable (no inappropriate logos).
Working Conditions
Required to work beyond the normal hours of work and adjust shifts as workloads and events require including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Required to work in cold environments, outdoors and in all weather conditions. Must have the physical capability to carry out the essential duties of the position.
