Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Dietary Aide is responsible to assist with food preparation, provide quality food service to residents, follow food safety, hygiene and other standards, and work as part of the Food Services Team.

Accountabilities:

  • Work in a fast paced, restaurant style environment
  • Read, understand, and follow duty list and cleaning lists
  • Wash and sanitize all dishes, including those used by other kitchen staff, as required
  • Organize dining room in time for meal service, and refreshment breaks
  • Organize time for meal service and clean up
  • Deliver tray service to resident suites as required
  • Ensure that meals are served in a professional and polite, friendly manner.
  • Take direction from Food Services Manager, or designate
  • Understand the importance of making sure the correct meal is served when requested as per dietary requisition
  • Understand Assisted Living and Independent Living concepts
  • Keep beverage and other work areas stocked and sanitized
  • Assist cooks in food preparation (cutting vegetables, peeling, portioning, dishing desserts) as requested
  • Assist cooks in dishing food during service as required
  • Prepares for next day as needed, including prepping fruit and restocking the beverage fridge for morning tea service
  • Adhere to all principles and directives of Food Safe in the storage, handling and preparation of food
  • When necessary, accepts deliveries, and ensures that orders are correct and properly stored.
  • Operate all equipment safely as per procedures
  • Work cooperatively with all food service staff to ensure smooth, professional delivery of service.
  • Assist with managing leftovers and clean up at the end of shift
  • Inform Food Services Manager or cook when items are getting low for re-ordering
  • Notify Food Services Manager of any concerns with residents
  • Read and understand communications via email, memos, and communication book
  • Dispose of garbage and cardboard in the afternoon and evening
  • Able to be flexible with duties to ensure teamwork and cooperation
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Strong verbal communication with kitchen staff, management, and residents
  • Accurately convey work-related matters in written format

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment is typically in a large and busy kitchen. The incumbent works as part of the dietary team.

Conditions may include:

  • Hot/Steamy environment
  • Crowded in some cases
  • Pressure with timelines
  • Cuts, burns, and entering freezers
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Sharp objects
  • Electrical hazards
  • Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors
  • Dealing with difficult resident situations

Physical Requirements

  • Able to push, pull, & lift a minimum of 23 kgs
  • Able to stand for entirety of shift
  • Able to crouch or bend down following proper form
  • Able to reach above and overhead

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year is an asset
  • Up to one year of experience in high-volume food services environment
  • Current Food Safe Level 1 minimum
  • WHMIS certificate
  • Current negative TB test
  • Able to pass a Criminal Record check (in vulnerable sector)

  • Strong verbal communication
  • Ability to follow direction from cooks or Food Services Manager
  • A disposition for working with seniors

Other Responsibilities

  • Able to support the mission statement of Southview Heights and Terrace
  • Able to attend staff meetings
  • Participate in performance evaluations with supervisor as required

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $20.42 to $22.33 with a maximum of $24.25.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
