The Role
Position: Proposal Writer
Location: Hybrid (Canada-based)
Typical Compensation Package: CA $65,000 – $80,000
About Us
Abacus Data is a full-service public opinion and market research consultancy trusted by business leaders, advocacy organizations, and governments across Canada. Under the leadership of David Coletto, we help clients understand people – their beliefs, expectations, decisions, and behaviour – and translate that understanding into strategy and stories.
Our approach merges rigorous methodology with vivid, actionable insight. We combine qualitative depth with quantitative scale, grounded in a clear grasp of Canadian public sentiment. We move fast, make complicated issues accessible, and deliver research that helps leaders act with confidence. As Abacus continues to grow under its Abacus 2.0 strategy, we are investing in the systems and talent that allow us to scale with quality, consistency, and ambition.
The Role
The Proposal Writer plays a critical role in enabling Abacus’s growth by owning the development of high-quality proposals and RFP responses that reflect our premium positioning, narrative insight, and commitment to client success.
This is not a purely administrative role. As Proposal Writer, you are a core part of the Sales & Marketing engine, translating client needs, research expertise, and strategic thinking into compelling written submissions that help win meaningful work. You will work closely with the Vice President, Sales & Marketing and senior leaders across the firm to ensure proposals are clear, persuasive, on-brand, and delivered efficiently.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the drafting and coordination of proposals and RFP responses from initial request through submission.
- Translate complex research approaches and strategic thinking into clear, client-focused narratives.
- Maintain and continuously improve proposal templates, boilerplate language, and pricing frameworks to support scale and consistency.
- Coordinate inputs from research, sales, and leadership while managing deadlines and priorities.
- Support a high-throughput proposal environment, producing up to 15 proposals per month at steady state within your first six months.
- Track proposal outcomes (wins, losses, turnaround time) and contribute to continuous improvement in our sales and proposal processes.
While this role is primarily remote, occasional coordination with colleagues in Ottawa and Toronto may be required.
Who You Are
You are a strong writer who thrives at the intersection of clarity, persuasion, and structure. You enjoy turning complexity into coherence and understand that great proposals are not just well written – they are well reasoned, client-centered, and strategically framed.
You’re comfortable working with senior professionals, pulling together diverse inputs, and managing multiple deadlines without sacrificing quality. You take pride in your craft and understand how strong writing directly supports business growth.
To us this means you:
- Have 3–6 years of relevant experience in proposal writing, communications, consulting, professional services, research, or a related field.
- Are an exceptional writer and editor, capable of producing clear, polished, and persuasive documents under tight timelines.
- Are comfortable synthesizing technical or research-driven content into accessible, compelling narratives.
- Have experience responding to RFPs or developing proposals in a consulting, agency, or professional services environment (strong asset).
- Are highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple concurrent proposals.
- Are collaborative and confident working with senior leaders while independently owning your work.
- Are interested in public opinion research, public affairs, consumer insights, or adjacent fields (experience is an asset, curiosity is essential).
- Want to grow alongside a firm that values rigour, storytelling, trust, and continuous improvement.
What We Offer
This role is designed for someone who values autonomy, accountability, and impact. You’ll be a critical contributor to Abacus’s growth strategy, and the opportunity to influence how Abacus presents itself to the market.
By joining our team, you will receive:
- A meaningful role within Abacus’s growth strategy.
- A total compensation package in the range of CA $65,000–80,000 base salary , plus performance-based variable compensation tied to proposal quality, throughput, and outcomes.
- A primarily remote and flexible working model that trusts you to manage your time responsibly.
- Exposure to high-impact work that informs important conversations and decisions across Canada.
- A bright, collaborative team that values rigour, excellence, creativity, and learning.
