About the role
Island Health is seeking a Medical Director whose primary responsibility will be Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC). The successful candidate will share responsibility with their co-leader the Director of IPAC. With their respective co-leader the Medical Director works proactively to ensure continuous quality improvement of service delivery. The scope of the Infection Prevention and Control Program provides consultation, education and support to all areas of Island Health including inpatients, long term care and community care. This person will be a knowledgeable physician and expert in IPAC practices and principles—someone equipped to speak confidently at national and provincial tables in alignment with the health authority’s priorities, values, and strategic direction.
Responsibilities will include day to day support for the island wide IPAC team of practitioners, managers, epidemiologist and data analyst, contributing to the development and updating of IPAC policies and guidelines, supporting the MHO Communicable Disease Program and Medical Microbiologists and serve as the medical interface between IPAC and physicians, nurses and other health care providers.
This job is an internal posting and restricted to physicians who are already employed in Island Health. Previous experience and training in Infection Prevention and Control is required. Vancouver Island is home to the Island Medical Program, a satellite of the University of British Columbia and there will be an opportunity for faculty appointment, academic program delivery and clinical research for the appropriate candidate. A strong commitment to data analytics and evidence-based practice exist in this Program.
The candidate must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in a relevant specialty with appropriate training and/or experience with infection prevention/control.
