Course Information
This course deepens understanding of the theoretical frameworks and builds knowledge about how to support two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and questioning (2SLGBTQI+) and gender independent youth in schools. The ways in which educators can support gender and sexual diversity in schools and cultivate safe, inclusive, and just school environments for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities will be examined. (.25 credit).
The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach 2SLGBTQI+ Studies in Education. This course prepares B.Ed. teacher candidates to engage thoughtfully and knowledgeably with gender and sexual diversity in educational contexts. Candidates will explore queer and trans theories, affirming pedagogical practices, and the role of educators in addressing systemic inequities affecting 2SLGBTQI+ students. The course promotes a critical understanding of educational inclusivity and the development of practical strategies for creating affirming learning environments.
- Deliver course content through synchronous online instruction.
- Engage teacher candidates in critical discussions on queer and trans theories, gender identity, sexual orientation, and inclusive pedagogical practices with a consideration for intersectional perspectives.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on student learning and assignments.
- Support candidates in developing affirming, inclusive, and equity-driven approaches to teaching 2SLGBTQI+ students.
- Create a respectful and inclusive online learning environment grounded in anti-oppressive principles.
- Assess student work and submit final grades in accordance with institutional policies.
- Liaise with the course coordinator and Teacher Education Office as required.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
Qualifications
Qualifications (Minimum Required):
- Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in LGBTQ+ studies, education, gender studies, equity and social justice education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of queer and trans theories and their application in K–12 educational contexts.
- Experience teaching about gender and sexual diversity in schools or post-secondary settings.
- Record of effective teaching performance at the post-secondary or teacher education level.
Preferred Qualifications / Assets:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in LGBTQ+ studies, education, gender studies, or equity and social justice education.
- Experience teaching at the K-12 level.
- OCT or equivalent certification.
- Lived experience and/or extensive engagement with 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
- Experience facilitating courses in inclusive, anti-oppressive, and equity-focused education.
- Experience teaching in online, synchronous environments.
- Research or practice-based experience in 2SLGBTQI+ inclusive curriculum or policy development.
