Summary of responsibilities

The Family Support Worker position acts as caregiver liaison and/or peer to people who are a caregiver to someone experiencing mental health and/or substance use health challenges.
Reporting to the Manager of Outpatient Mental Health Services, Crisis & Mobile Response Services, and Assertive Community Treatment Team, the Family Support Worker will provide non-clinical one-to-one and group support in addition to sharing expertise derived from lived experience within the mental health and substance use health system. This position uses a model of intentional peer support to engage caregivers, provide assistance, and mentorship through supportive listening. By sharing information and tools such as, the Family Wellness Recovery Action Plan (FWRAP), this position provides the opportunity to facilitate smoother transitions between hospital and community services.

Requirements of the job

  • Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma

  • Lived experience as a caregiver to immediate family members/loved ones experiencing mental health/and or substance use health

  • Peer mentoring skills

  • Completion of peer training and mentorship with the Psychiatric Survivor of Ottawa (PSO) or equivalent organization

  • Training certifications in programs such as Family Wellness Recovery Action Plan (FWRAP), Non-violent Crisis intervention

  • Excellent people, time management and organization skills

  • Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance

  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety

  • Computer Skills

  • Functional level in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French) and testing completed

Assets:

  • College-level education in Social Work/Counselling/Social Sciences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of family and peer support community resources
