Nature & Scope

We are seeking a Senior Accountant with a strong and strategic understanding of accounting principles to join our team. Reporting to the Manager, Finance (Financial Planning & Analysis), the Senior Accountant will help lead portfolios, perform various reconciliations, and take ownership on working papers assigned. The position will assist on planning, forecasting, and budgeting activities that support major business decisions and overall financial health of the organization. In addition, this position will direct the work of Accounts Payable staff and analyze related vendor and payment data. The Senior Accountant will work closely with other Accounting Staff and Finance Managers and is responsible for supporting the full range of accounting, month end, and year end cycle duties and responsibilities for the YMCA BC.

The YMCA BC is a CPA Pre-approved Program Route (PPR) office.

Major Responsibilities**-in this position, you will:**

  • Perform budgeting and forecasting variance analysis for various levels of management
  • Prepare profit and loss models, balance sheets and other management reports, using Microsoft Excel and Sage Intacct to forecast financial outcomes
  • Organize data into accessible reports and perform various types of analysis using key metrics such as yearly growth, return on assets and revenue, and productivity & staffing costs ratios
  • Prepare What-If Analysis to monitor how the key metrics will impact the overall financial outcome of the organization
  • Reviewing, editing, and posting the month end entries from subsystems including sub-ledger entries and accruals information to the general ledger
  • Analyzing operational financial statements for variances and management reporting
  • Working with branch administrative staff to correct procedures and resolve issues
  • Training staff on procedures related to general accounting
  • Preparing statistics reports and formatting and standardizing financial reporting for branches
  • Preparation of year-end audit working papers
  • Using experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
  • Managing processes and monitoring compliance while highlighting areas of improvement and efficiencies
  • General accounting responsibilities to contribute to the overall workflow of the department
  • Prepare and review Prototype reporting for MCFD
  • Lead and manage the audit for prototype sites for government year end and answer queries from MCFD on reporting
  • Analyze childcare statistics for enrolment
  • Assist with Childcare system change
  • Handle the full cycle accounting for The YMCA BC Foundation

Qualification**-you bring:**

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is strongly preferred
  • Completion of an accounting diploma or degree
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in accounting environment (not for profit preferred)
  • Experience with Sage Intacct is an asset
  • Experience with Active Net is an asset
  • Advanced Excel skills required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work within a team and independently
  • Ability to consistently meet all deadlines
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
