Position Title: Facilities Assistant

Location: YMCA Camp Elphinstone (1760 YMCA Road, Gibsons, BC, V0N 1V6)

Applicants must reside in Gibsons, BC/surrounding areas at the time of the application.

Term: Temporary, Part-Time

Hours: 15 Hours per week

Shift: 7:30am - 3:30pm

Start Date: October 1, 2025

End Date: April 3, 2026

Salary: $20.00 per hour

Reports To: Facilities Manager

Nature & Scope

The Facility Maintenance Assistant is an integral part to ensuring camp grounds and buildings are kept in a safe and good working order for staff and visitors. Maintenance staff at Camp Elphinstone oversee and carry out all aspects of the general upkeep and maintenance for the camp. This includes but is not limited to vehicle maintenance, landscaping, and building maintenance. The position requires someone who is flexible, a creative problem solver, and a team player.

YMCA Camp Elphinstone, located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Vancouver. Nestled on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound, the camp offers a variety of programs for youth ages 5-17 during July and August. These include one- and two-week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, multi-day paddling and hiking trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone functions as an Outdoor Education, Event, and Retreat Centre, hosting schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Annually, the camp serves over 10,000 participants.

YMCA Camp Elphinstone can accommodate and dine up to 472 campers or guests. During July and August, the camp employs around 140 staff and volunteers, while the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons see a team of 20-50 members. In the winter season, a smaller core team of 10 staff members is maintained. Successful staff at Camp Elphinstone are self-motivated individuals dedicated to helping children and youth thrive in an outdoor camp setting, and they are committed to providing 5-star customer service to all client groups.

Major Responsibilities**-in this position, you will:**

  • Perform maintenance tasks necessary to keep camp facilities safe, clean, and in excellent shape
  • Lawnmowing and landscaping duties
  • Trail maintenance
  • Cleaning and upkeep of buildings and equipment
  • Role modeling appropriate behavior
  • The Facility Maintenance Assistant may be required to assist in duties not listed above. The YMCA expects the support of all staff members in fulfilling objectives that may not be specific to this position

Qualification**-you bring:**

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C is an asset
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
