About the role

The Library’s mission is to sustainably develop, preserve and make accessible UWinnipeg’s knowledge and cultural resources in support of teaching and research. It is a core academic service that provides the spaces and services necessary for students, faculty, and community researchers to discover, create, access and use these resources.

TheCommunications and Events Officer is a full-time continuingposition that develops strategies and content designed to facilitate faculty, student and community engagement with the Library. They will work to ensure the campus community is informed of library resources, services, programming, and expertise. This position creates and manages a wide range of digital content and print material, ensuring an active library presence across a range of university channels, and will help coordinate special events.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages an annual communications plan that aligns messaging with audiences and objectives across library and university channels.
  • Manages social media channels, develops content, handles inquiries, maintains an awareness of current trends and developments, monitors analytics and prepares statistical reports.
  • Designs and coordinates the development of digital and graphic media, communicates with internal contacts for high-profile projects as appropriate.
  • Acts as lead content editor for library web properties, creates, edits, and updates web content.
  • Prepares announcements and news stories to highlight library programs, services, resources, and expertise.
  • Takes direction from the Dean’s Office on strategic messaging, provides design and marketing support for print and related materials, and for strategic and reporting documentation
  • Works with the User Experience and Assessment Librarian to integrate user perspectives, library data, and best practices into communications, content, and program strategy. Monitors digital spaces and accessibility tools to help assess and improve the user experience.
  • Manages the library’s digital and print signage.
  • Monitors all library messaging channels to ensure that communications align with university style, accessibility, and branding guidelines.
  • Provides marketing support for educational programming.
  • Works with the User Experience and Assessment Librarian and other program leads to identify, develop, and market relevant library programs.
  • Ensures the professional and effective delivery of event programs.
  • Leads the library’s involvement in special campus events, coordinates the design, staffing, setup, and teardown of library presentation booths.
  • May temporarily supervise the work of student assistants and/or work placement students.
  • Attends meetings and takes part in library committees, as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related discipline (Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Rhetoric, Marketing, Psychology), or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum two years of related marketing and communications experience.
  • Experience in a professional writing or content production role preferred.
  • Experience planning and executing events.
  • Experience working in a library, archives, museum or higher education setting would be an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, with the demonstrated ability to align content, media, style, and tone to appropriate audiences.
  • Political acuity and situational awareness; ability to flag, address, and resolve potential issues independently or request support from supervisors.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, confidence, and the ability to handle difficult messaging and/or stressful interactions with library users.
  • Familiarity with creating and managing communications plans.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital marketing trends and social media tools.
  • Excellent creative skills coupled with the ability to scope, manage, and produce creative content interpedently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement while representing the library.
  • Must have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft 365.
  • Must have experience using digital media tools to create and edit graphic, photo, and video content, Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Ability and interest to learn new software applications, digital tools, equipment, and techniques as needs change or technology evolves.
  • Knowledge of and experience with using web content management systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and modify basic front-end coding languages (HTML, CSS) would be an asset.
  • Skills in photography, video, and/or related media production equipment would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of writing for the web and/or basic digital usability principles would be an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • May occasionally attend campus events and assist with programming outside of normal business hours.

The salary range for this position will be from $52,579.80 to $74,729.20 annually.

**Note:**The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.
