About the role
The Lead Environment Generalist is responsible for leading the Environment team and contributing to photo-realistic 2D and 3D environments and concepts. They work directly on tasks as well as providing guidance to team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the most efficient methodology per environment brief. Approaches will vary from 2.5D Matte Painting projection setups, through full 3D asset builds, using both bespoke and procedural methods
- Evaluate the schedule and assign tasks to appropriate team members
- Provide confident leadership and mentorship to the Environments team
- Acquire photographic reference materials for accurate photo-real work
- Perform tasks related to integrating imagery into shots and preserving a unified sense of lighting, perspective, and color
- Create 2D paintings and 3D builds using photography, assets and reference material
- Communicate clearly and effectively with show production and creative colleagues
- Able to troubleshoot problems effectively either through technical know-how or via communication
- Ability to train and mentor junior artists to be productive members of the team
- Work closely with the VFX Supervisors to ensure high quality work is done smoothly and efficiently
- Provide artistic and technical direction to team members as well as receiving from supervisors
- Adept at translating notes from the client or VFX Supe into clear direction for the artist
Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of previous experience as a Digital Matte Painter or Environment Artist for live action feature and/or television
- Proven team leadership and supervision skills
- Strong understanding of 3D packages such as Maya, Max and Houdini, and 2D packages such as Photoshop and Nuke
- Proficient with supplementary packages such as SpeedTree, Gaea, Substance and ZBrush
- Skilled at environment assembly, asset generation including modeling and texturing, scattering, set dressing
- Strong understanding of Nuke, 3D environment layout, Maya, and camera projections
- Knowledge of Lighting is a plus
- Good knowledge of and ability to effectively use production tools such as Shotgrid and RV, and communication channels such as Slack, email & video calls
- Strong time management and organisation of scene files, documentation and publishes
This salary range is specific to applicants applying to our position in Vancouver, BC. To determine your base salary, we consider your qualifications, skills, and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary outside of this range and will also be dependent on your location.
