Product Designer

Full-Time | Design Department | Reports to: Senior Design Lead

About this role

Umbra is seeking a Product Designer to contribute to the development of innovative, manufacturable products across a range of categories.

This role focuses on supporting product design projects from concept through production, contributing ideas, and delivering strong execution aligned with Umbra's design vision and business goals.

You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with cross-functional teams and external vendors to bring products to market. This role is ideal for a designer with strong creative thinking, technical skills, and design judgment.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to product design projects from concept to production
  • Support concept development and explore product ideas aligned with Umbra's brand
  • Develop design solutions across form, function, materials, and user experience
  • Translate requirements into manufacturable design outcomes
  • Collaborate with engineering, sourcing, marketing, and vendors
  • Prepare production-ready 2D/3D files and documentation
  • Ensure designs are feasible and aligned with manufacturing constraints
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute team feedback
  • Collaborate with designers as needed

Requirements

What you’ll bring

  • Work Style & Personality Requirements

    • Efficient & Adaptable - Able to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities while maintaining quality
    • Team Player - Strong communication, collaboration, and listening skills
  • Technical Strengths Required

    • Experience using AI tools to support workflows and design tasks
    • Working knowledge of SolidWorks (Onshape is a plus)
    • Ability to create and edit 2D graphics for products and presentations
  • Extra Strengths

    • Ability to contribute original design ideas
    • Model-making or shop mock-up experience
    • Understanding of production process (molding, casting, fabrication)
    • Experience working with materials such as plastics, metals, ceramics, and textiles)
  • Portfolio Requirement

    • The portfolio should demonstrate
      • Experience contributing to products from concept to production (or production-ready outcomes)
      • Strong design process, including ideation, iteration, and problem-solving
      • Clear articulation of your contributions within each project
      • High-quality execution in CAD, form development, and presentation
    • Include at least one example showing how you used AI tools, clearly explaining:
      • Which AI tool(s) were used
      • How the tool was applied within the workflow
      • What problem it helped solve or how it improved efficiency, quality, or output
  • Experience

    • 4-8+ years of experience in product / industrial design
    • Experience contributing to projects across multiple stages of development
    • Experience working with manufacturers, vendors, and cross-functional teams
  • Education

    • Degree in Industrial Design or a related field
  • Mindset

    • Entrepreneurial, proactive, and solution-oriented.
    • Comfortable taking direction and contributing to team success
  • Organizational & Communication Skills

    • Time management

    • Ability to communicate design related intent clearly
