Equity Research Associate – Oil & Gas
Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join our Canadian Oil & Gas equity research team. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in finance and/or energy, a genuine interest in capital markets, and intellectual curiosity to thrive in a fast-paced, idea-driven environment.
Candidates who are eager to leverage technology and AI to enhance research efficiency, data analysis, and insight generation will be particularly well suited to this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Building, maintaining, and updating detailed financial and valuation models
- Analyzing company financial statements, earnings releases, regulatory filings, and management transcripts
- Monitoring industry developments, company-specific news, and macro drivers relevant to coverage
- Supporting the preparation of equity research reports and, over time, contributing to investment theses
- Responding to ad hoc data, analysis, and information requests from internal and external clients
- Maintaining and analyzing industry and company-level datasets including GeoSCOUT oil & gas data.
- Participating in site visits, management meetings, and industry events
- Communicating investment views and recommendations to analysts, portfolio managers, and clients
- Applying AI tools and automation to improve research workflows, data processing, and analytical output
Experience & Skills:
A combination of strong analytical ability, writing skills, and demonstrated interest in equity research or finance through relevant education or work experience is required. Prior oil & gas industry experience is beneficial but not mandatory. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines
- Professionalism and confidence interacting with company management teams and investment professionals
- Intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and the ability to learn quickly
- A strong work ethic, self-motivation, and comfort with non-standard working hours, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends
- Proficiency with relevant technology and data platforms, including Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Bloomberg, FactSet, GeoSCOUT, or similar tools is an asset
- Demonstrated experience using AI tools to enhance productivity, analysis, or research quality
Education & Credentials:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Degree in finance, economics, engineering, or a related field is an asset
- CFA designation or progress toward the CFA program is a strong advantage

Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
