About the role
As a Product Designer - Mechatronic Systems, you will work closely with an established engineering team to enhance existing products and drive new developments. This role will design and develop mechanical engineering designs, drawings, and specifications to build equipment dedicated to the rugged and challenging terrain of the forestry industry. To excel in this role, a combination of technical skills is required, including problem-solving and strong mechanical aptitude. Experience with fluid power systems, engine systems, electrical, and electronic systems, as well as drive train systems is a strong asset.
Locations: Opportunities exist in Paris and Cambridge, ON
Dedicated Shift: 8:00am – 4:30pm, Monday – Friday
Job Duties:
- Create detailed designs, perform calculations, and develop prototypes for mechanical systems, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and industry standards
- Develop electro-hydraulic, computer-controlled systems integrating hydraulic components, sensors, input devices, and control logic to directly, remotely, automatically, or autonomously control mobile machines
- Create efficient and user friendly interface systems for operators and service technicians
- Analyze and select appropriate materials and components based on mechanical properties, cost, and suitability for manufacturing processes
- Collaborate and work closely with cross-functional teams including designers/engineers, manufacturing, and quality control, to ensure seamless integration of designs into production
- Conduct tests such as stress analysis, fatigue testing, vibration analysis, and control logic to validate designs and optimize performance, strength, response to stress, and other characteristics
- Create technical documentation, including design specifications, control logic, and bills of materials
- Identify opportunities for design optimization, cost reduction, and efficiency improvements
- Occasionally participate in hands-on troubleshooting during the fabrication and/or assembly process
- When required, provide field support for equipment troubleshooting and improvements
- Occasionally travel inside and outside Canada for research and field support
Skills and Experience:
- A hands-on, creative, self-motivated, passionate person willing to take on diverse and challenging technical tasks
- Solid understanding of engineering principles, control logic, mobile computer systems, user interfaces, low power electrical design, and mobile hydraulic systems
- Design tasks require collaboration with coworkers, and effective communication and reasoning skills are essential when working on projects that involve multiple team members
- Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
- Ability to create visually appealing and user-friendly products balancing aesthetics with practicality
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and continuously learn to innovate and improve existing solutions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- Previous design experience within similar industries to forestry such as mobile heavy-duty equipment used in construction, transportation, mining, oil and gas, material handling, landscaping, land clearing, and farming an asset.
- Strong understanding of machine design fundamentals, mechanics, machine control theory, sensor technologies, remote control, and autonomous control systems
- (Remove this requirement) Understanding of structural FEA and dynamic simulation of machine components.
- Software experience including 3D modeling (SolidWorks).
- Design experience in any of the following:
- Welded steel fabrications for manual and robotic welding
- Hydraulic cylinders and components, as well as control valve and plumbing details; implementing advanced hydraulic power and electronic control systems, sensors, and controllers.
- Diesel engine installations, vehicle drive train transmissions and axle component selection
- Attachments to seamlessly integrate with heavy equipment including consideration for load distribution, stress analysis, material selection, and ease of installation.
