The AESO is undergoing a transformative restructuring of Alberta’s electricity market through the Restructured Energy Market (REM) program—a multi-year, enterprise-wide initiative focused on implementing a new Energy Settlement System (ESS) and integrating it with other mission-critical systems and processes across the organization.
Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Cloud Applications, we are seeking a Senior Technical Lead with a strong background in the electric utility sector and deep experience in complex system implementations and product management to join our dynamic team.
We are looking for a seasoned Technical Lead to drive the design and delivery of our Energy Settlement System. This role combines strategic architecture with hands-on leadership to build robust, scalable, and compliant solutions for energy market operations, settlements, and reconciliation.
This role will be a key position in the implementation of the ESS and will transition to a role on the product team for ongoing operations for the lifecycle of the ESS system, ensuring the solution meets the evolving needs of the organization while delivering value across the market.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Technical Capabilities:
- Design and maintain the architecture of the Energy Settlement System, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and market rules.
- Translate complex business processes (e.g., meter data validation, imbalance settlement, tariff application) into scalable technical solutions.
- Define integration strategies with upstream/downstream systems such as market operators, billing platforms, and data lakes.
- Ensure data integrity, auditability, and performance across high-volume transactional systems.
- Evaluate and recommend technologies for real-time data processing, secure data exchange, and analytics.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Define architectural standards, patterns, and best practices.
- Evaluate and recommend technologies, frameworks, and tools aligned with product goals.
- Ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture and compliance standards.
Technical Leadership:
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, especially those involving time-series data, settlement calculations, and system integrations.
- Collaborate with business analysts, market experts, and compliance teams to ensure technical solutions meet operational needs.
- Lead the technical direction of the product, guiding development teams through design, implementation, and delivery.
- Drive agile development processes and ensure timely delivery of features.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide hands-on support when needed.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
What you’ll bring to us:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 15+ years of software engineering and product development experience, including proven Technical Lead roles.
- Expertise in cloud platforms (Azure preferred, AWS, GCP), microservices, secure API design, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Proficiency in modern programming languages/frameworks (Java, .NET, Python, Node.js).
- Strong knowledge of energy market operations, settlement processes, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience with time-series databases, ETL pipelines, data reconciliation, and performance optimization.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with ISO/RTO systems, energy trading platforms, or utility billing systems.
- Experience with data governance, audit trails, and compliance reporting.
- Certifications in cloud architecture or agile methodologies.
