Sunbeam Developmental Resource Centre (SDRC) is the single point of access to developmental services for children in the Region of Waterloo. SDRC provides case management and clinical services to individuals with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. SDRC also assists them and their caregivers in connecting with community services and supports. SDRC’s services are available to children and adults with developmental disabilities in Waterloo Region. (www.sdrc.ca)
We are presently inviting applications for a full-time Communications Disorder Assistant (CDA) on a 1-year contract. The successful candidate will be required to work flexible hours Monday – Friday, including occasional evenings. The successful candidate will be based out of our Kitchener location but will be required to travel throughout Waterloo Region.
As part of our Brightside ABA Services (https://brightsideabaservices.com/), the successful candidate will responsible for assisting the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to complete speech and language assessment, consultation, and intervention services to individuals with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the CDA will contribute to individualized planning and support in both community living and urgent response contexts. This role will primarily be using the mediator model to provide consultation rather than to provide long term direct therapy.
Responsibilities:

- Assist the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in conducting speech and language consultation/therapy sessions, both one-on-one and in group settings.
- Implement treatment plans as directed by the supervising SLP focusing on communication, speech, language and/or social communication skills.
- Implement, monitor and support Augmentative Communications Systems.
- Actively participate alongside supervising SLP in multidisciplinary team, and family meetings to support a collaborative approach.
- Support family and caregiver education by providing strategies and resources under direction of the SLP, to enhance communication skill development at home.
- Prepare therapy materials, activities, and resources tailored to individual client needs.
- Track client progress, document client notes, and report findings to the SLP.
- Maintain a positive and engaging therapeutic environment to encourage participation and progress.
- Work in partnership with other SDRC disciplines to further client goals.
- Participate in interagency planning groups and task forces with a focus on speech and language as they relate to people with an Intellectual Disability/Autism Spectrum disorder living in the community.
- Represent the agency in a manner that is congruent with the values of Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services;
- Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research;
- Undertake other assigned duties, as required.
Qualifications

- The skills and knowledge required for this position are normally associated with the completion of Communicative Disorders Assistant Certification.
- Experience in working with individuals with a Intellectual Disability or ASD.
- Experience with the emotional and cognitive needs/issues of individuals with an Intellectual Disability/ASD.
- Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices is an advantage.
- Strong interviewing skills.
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
- Current certification in CPI-Prepare Training is required (or must be prepared to obtain.)
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Flexible and responsive to urgent needs in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient with electronic documentation and virtual service delivery platforms.
- Commitment to culturally responsive and family-centered practices.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle (travel within Waterloo Region required).
