The Numeracy Interventionist will work directly with students in elementary schools, and with teachers in those grades, to support learners who require additional assistance in developing foundational and grade-level numeracy skills. This role is intended to support students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 who are performing below grade-level expectations in mathematics by identifying learning gaps, designing targeted interventions, and collaborating with school staff to improve student numeracy outcomes.
They will work directly under the guidance and support of the Director of Teaching and Learning and in collaboration with the Numeracy Coordinator. Numeracy intervention incorporates a number of different instructional approaches (i.e. small group, whole group, one-on-one, in-class support) and requires the successful candidate to demonstrate strong emotional regulation, adaptability, and relationship-building skills while working in a variety of capacities each day. This teacher must think on their feet, problem solve in the moment, and work flexibly and collaboratively with school teams to create environments that support successful numeracy teaching and learning.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Education Degree.
- Familiarity with the Alberta K-5 Mathematics curriculum.
- Strong understanding of foundational and developmental numeracy instruction in early and elementary years.
- Experience using diagnostic and formative assessment to identify student learning needs.
- Effective organizational and data management skills.
- Ability to build strong relationships with young learners, staff, and families.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students using age-appropriate positive reinforcement and/or school-specific behaviour strategies.
- Ability to support students experiencing learning gaps, disengagement, or low confidence in mathematics.
- The ability to be self-directed is essential.
Desired Qualifications/Skills:
- Experience teaching elementary mathematics and related subjects.
- Experience delivering targeted intervention for struggling learners.
- Experience using and analyzing a variety of numeracy teaching strategies and assessments.
- Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs, including students with learning gaps or interrupted learning.
- Knowledge of evidence-based numeracy intervention practices.
- Experience collaborating with teachers to support differentiated instruction and intervention planning.
- Experience with multi-tiered systems of support/intervention models would be considered an asset.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Teach foundational numeracy skills to students, as appropriate.
- Identify students requiring intervention through data analysis, teacher collaboration, and assessment.
- Conduct diagnostic and formative assessment to identify learning gaps and monitor student progress.
- Design and deliver targeted numeracy interventions for students performing below grade-level expectations.
- Provide a variety of numeracy approaches with whole group, small groups, individual students, and in-class support as appropriate.
- Support students in rebuilding foundational numeracy skills, including number sense, counting, place value, operational fluency, patterning, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving.
- Create, collect, and examine data to measure student progress and the effectiveness of interventions.
- Collaborate with teachers and other members of the school team to support students with numeracy needs and develop classroom strategies for success.
- Model effective numeracy intervention practices and support teacher capacity in elementary numeracy instruction.
- Participate in and/or lead professional development in the implementation of elementary mathematics curriculum and effective intervention practices.
- Support and teach numeracy as outlined in the Division Numeracy Framework.
- Follow any/all IPP strategies.
- Communicate student progress, intervention strategies, and recommendations for growth to students, parents/guardians, and school teams.
- Maintain accurate records related to intervention planning, progress monitoring, and student outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned.
