What is the opportunity?

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Vice President, Commodities Origination to join our team in Calgary. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with a proven track record in commodities origination or trading, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of global commodities markets. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in driving business growth by identifying and executing strategic opportunities across a diverse range of commodities, cultivating strong client relationships, and delivering innovative solutions for producers and consumers.

What will you do?

Key Responsibilities

Business Development:

  • Proactively support current clients by providing industry insights, tailored trading strategies, and ongoing relationship management.
  • Identify, develop, and execute new business opportunities in commodities origination, focusing on both producer and consumer strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, producers, consumers, and internal stakeholders to drive revenue growth.
  • Lead negotiations and structure complex commodity transactions that align with client needs and organizational objectives.

Market Expertise:

  • Leverage extensive knowledge of commodities markets, with expertise in physical natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGL), liquefied natural gas (LNG), or power markets.
  • Develop and execute origination strategies tailored to both producers and consumers, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities within these markets.
  • Stay informed on market developments, regulatory changes, and emerging trends to provide strategic insights and recommendations to clients and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with trading teams to align origination strategies with market dynamics and organizational goals.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including trading, risk management, legal, and operations, to ensure seamless transaction execution.
  • Mentor and guide team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and client meetings to enhance visibility and strengthen the organization’s market presence.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in commodities origination, trading, or related roles, with expertise in global commodities markets.
  • Proven ability to structure and execute complex commodity transactions.
  • In-depth knowledge of energy markets, including market dynamics, key drivers, and major industry participants.
  • Demonstrated experience working with both producers and consumers in the commodities space.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a strategic and results-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in commodity structured finance is an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., CFA, MBA) are considered an asset.
