About the role

Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working at our Edmonton Diagnostic Services (Patient Testing) Laboratory and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances. About The Role Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time (0.4 FTE) Medical Officer to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory and Stem Cell Services team in our Medical Affairs division .

In this role, you will provide clinically relevant direction and advice on all medical and technical services related to the Diagnostic Services Laboratory, Edmonton. This laboratory performs perinatal testing for the province of Alberta, as well as RHD and RHCE genotyping on a national basis for the provinces and territories served by Canadian Blood Services. The successful candidate will serve as the Medical Director of the Diagnostic Services Laboratory in Edmonton.

Formula for success

  • Applying your demonstrated knowledge, you will assume responsibility and authority for the professional, technical, scientific, consultative, organizational, administrative and clinical activities of the Diagnostic Services Laboratory – Edmonton, including quality assurance functions and supervision of tests and reporting of results.
  • In-conjunction with the Director of Testing, and under the direction of the Medical Director, Laboratory Services, you will oversee all medical aspects of the Diagnostic Services Laboratory, Edmonton.
  • As medical director of the laboratory you will collaborate with medical and technical colleagues to ensure that laboratory policies and practises in the Canadian Blood Services’ laboratory best meet the needs of hospitals and patients in Alberta.
  • You will provide consultative services on all aspects of testing performed within the laboratory to stakeholders including physicians and allied health professions at local universities, colleges, hospitals, blood offices and educational programs.
  • Through the establishment and maturation of effective working relationships, you will assure ongoing communication between Canadian Blood Services and the hospitals and ordering physicians served by Canadian Blood Services.
  • You will ensure that laboratory accreditation requirements are met.
  • You will provide consultative services and medical expertise to internal stakeholders at Canadian Blood Services.
  • You will collaborate with other physicians to ensure that full on-call services for medical matters are always provided to Canadian Blood Services, Diagnostic Services Laboratory, Edmonton. Performs other related duties as required.

Desired education and skills

  • A license in good standing to practice medicine in the province of Alberta.
  • Must meet all relevant provincial requirements as defined in legislation and by accrediting bodies for province of residence.
  • Expertise or training in transfusion medicine or a related field is essential.
  • A speciality certification in Hematology, Hematopathology, General Pathology, Transfusion Medicine or a related field is desirable.
