Job Summary The Automation Specialist works within the Engineering Department to develop and manage automation related capital projects on time, within budget and according to cGMP guidelines. These projects and initiatives support corporate objectives and operational excellence. He/she is responsible for determining automation requirements to ensure the design and implementation meet project objectives and align with existing system architecture. Ensure instrumentation and equipment are selected efficiently and correctly. Responsible for assessing and implementing system level improvements and delivering on site objectives. Provide technical support to other Facility Services teams, Engineering projects, and other departments.
Responsibilities
- Develop control system architecture, including design of control system hardware and software.
- Prepare specifications for configuration design, user requirements, functional requirements, and process narratives using instrument and I/O lists, P&ID diagrams.
- Assist in the identification of user requirements to guide stakeholders in understanding of trade-offs between cost, schedule, quality, and risk
- Proposes unique solutions to problems of a diverse scope using technical proficiency, creativity, and collaboration with others through independent thought, communication, and technical writing.
- Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for resolving issues and obtaining solutions with minimal input from leader.
- Performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and act as system administrator for Honeywell EBI DCS system, Delta V DCS system, including field wiring and field installment of Delta V related equipment.
- Work towards continuous improvement of the plant reliability of control and instrumentation systems through the application of effective reliability strategies, root cause analysis, problem solving and sound engineering practice
- Design, Implementation, validation and maintenance of controls systems and equipment
- Perform critical assessments when there are unexpected equipment failures to determine if changes to the maintenance program are appropriate.
- Commission systems and perform FAT/SATs as required.
- Participate in regulatory agency inspections on behalf of EFV as required. (CDC, FDA, Health Canada, etc.)
- Trains and provides technical support as an SME to support operations and EFV initiatives.
- Prepares documents, reports and presentations with the ability to lead effective meetings.
- Manage competing demands and priorities.

- University Degree or College Technologist Diploma in Mechanical, BioSystems, BioMedical,Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical or Computer, accompanied by 5+ years in industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in a Pharmaceutical or other federally regulated industry is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in using DeltaV, EBI and PLC systems is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of standards, techniques, policies, and processes.
- Knowledge of equipment, facilities, utilities such as water purification, compressed air, and HVAC.
- Strong project management skills.
- Knowledge of various types of control valves, transmitters (pressure, temperature, flow etc).
- Understanding of the engineering documents associated with controls such as: P&ID's, loop sheets, panel layouts, control narratives, logic diagrams, etc.
- Familiarity with codes, national standards, and regulations.
- Good leadership/decision making skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Products.
- Basic knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Successful completion of our security clearance is required.
