JOB SUMMARY
The Youth Leadership Coordinator will support young people with the opportunity to develop their skills, work closely with others and share ideas that influence positive change. The Youth Leadership Coordinator will lead a culturally responsive, youth-led diversion programming that allows for a broad group of at-risk youth from Okanagan Indian Band, nation and regional communities to share resources, tools, best practices, cultural teachings and Western ways
This position will require regular evening/weekend work.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
Reports to Community Safety Coordinator, dotted line to the Wellness Programs Lead.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop framework that addresses specific goals, identify gaps, barriers
-
Support Youth Leadership Council meetings
-
Align with cross cultural practices and protocols
-
Project coordination
-
Creation and-or compilation of materials of materials and documents
-
Communication between stakeholders
-
Scheduling of events/activities
-
Delivery of educational information/resources via communications, facilitation
-
Engage with Youth to enhance leadership and life skills.
-
Participate in Community Consultative Group and supports initiatives that focus on crime prevention and intervention.
-
Maintains program statistics, completes written reports and completes program evaluations
-
All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.

Participate in community events as requested
-
Perform other related duties as required
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
-
Creates program plans, writes reports and makes formal presentations
-
Provide support to the Youth Leadership Council in structure development, format, and processes to enhance the youth voice in community.
-
Identifies and pursues sources of funding for projects, activities and/or events
-
Undertakes administrative tasks, verifying information and responding to queries
-
Meets, liaises and networks with internal and external agencies
-
Liaise with other OKIB staff to determine partnership opportunities
-
Annual review of the Youth Leadership Terms of Reference and Youth Leadership Council recruitment
-
Attends meetings
-
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
You have education, experience, or an equivalent combination may be considered. You are community-minded, detail-oriented, have a willingness to contribute to a team and an excellent communicator.
Education
-
Two years post-secondary education in child/youth related services or comparable experience
-
Current First Aid/CPR certificate or willing to obtain
-
Valid BC Driver’s licence, minimum Class 5, and reliable vehicle
Experience
-
3 years of experience working with youth
-
3 years of demonstrated experience in program planning and implementation
-
Experience working with First Nations communities
-
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
-
Criminal record check that includes the vulnerable sector
-
Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Competencies (KSAs & Desired Attributes)

Possesses cultural appropriateness and sensitivity towards OKIB and Community
-
Knowledge of Okanagan culture and traditions
-
Demonstrated ability to engage with difficult to reach youth and young people

Awareness of adolescent social, emotional, and cognitive development

Ability to work as a part of an inter-disciplinary team
-
Strong organizational skills
-
Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Working knowledge of computer software such as: MS Word, Excel, Outlook and strong internet and social media literacy

Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Ability to work independently and collaboratively
CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE
$27.52 per hour

About Okanagan Indian Band
The Okanagan Indian Band is working toward ensuring the future through Cultural, Social and Economic Development, guided by the leadership of an elected Chief and Council. The band administration is organized departmentally to deliver services and manage the strategic goals of the Chief and Council and Okanagan Indian Band membership.
The Okanagan Indian Band is one of the eight member Band communities of the Okanagan Nation; the other member Band communities are Lower Similkameen Indian Band, Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Osoyoos Indian Band, Upper Nicola Band, Penticton Indian Band, Westbank First Nation and the Colville Confederated Tribes.
The presently known Okanagan valley is also known as the Okanagan Indian Nations traditional territory, or as the "Syeelhwh Nation", which means the people who live here". "S-Ookanhkchinx" or Okanagan translates to mean "transport toward the head or top end". This refers to the people traveling from the head of the Okanagan Lake to where the Okanagan river meet the Columbia river. In other words Okanagan Lake and Okanagan river were the traditional transportation routes of the people and their traditional boundaries encompassed this area.
