About The Role As a Junior Operator – Distribution, you’ll learn on the job under the guidance of experienced team members. You’ll gradually take on more responsibility as you build your technical knowledge of natural gas utility systems and field operations. You’ll support safe and efficient work on everything upstream of the gas meter, including distribution mains and services, valves, regulators, cathodic protection systems, and metering equipment. You’ll also respond to service calls, assist in emergency situations, and learn how to apply safety procedures and industry standards to real work in the field.
What You’ll Do:
- Assist with the installation, construction, inspection, testing, and servicing of natural gas utility systems
- Support the operation and maintenance of regulating, metering, and odorization equipment
- Respond to, or assist with, emergency calls including gas leaks, odors, fires, and explosions
- Locate underground gas systems and perform leak detection surveys
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of cathodic protection to prevent pipeline corrosion
- Safely operate construction equipment, tools, and instruments under supervision
- Perform meter turn-ons, turn-offs, and lighting procedures as directed
- Prepare pipe using cutters, threading machines, and vices
- Assist with testing, calibration, and repairs to equipment
- Participate in inspections and quality assurance for work completed by contractors or other teams
- Read meters and report encroachments or built-overs as required
- Support shipping, receiving, and inventory duties when needed
- Complete and maintain accurate records
- Identify and report suspected gas theft
- Maintain positive working relationships with customers, coworkers, and contractors
- Participate in on-the-job training and provide peer support when deemed competent
- Perform other related duties as required
Operational Commitment:
- Able to work in various weather conditions, participate in emergency callouts, and adapt to shift schedules.
- Capable of wearing and operating breathing apparatus and other safety equipment.
Residency Requirements: Employees must reside within:
- The Viking service territory (agency), and
- 30 minutes from their place of residence to the Viking Office (5506 54 Ave, Viking)
What You Bring:
- High school diploma or equivalent (C.A.E.C or G.E.D.)
- Commitment to maintaining high safety standards, including meeting pre-employment screening including Drug & Alcohol testing.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license (with a clean driving record).
- Experience in oil and gas field operations, pipeline construction, pipefitting, plumbing, HVAC installation, or utility construction labour is considered an asset
- Familiarity with natural gas infrastructure, pressure controls systems, cathodic protection, odorization, or gas leak detection are considered an asset.
- Experience using hand tools and power tools including pipe cutters, threading machines, and measuring equipment is beneficial.
- Willingness and ability to learn technical systems and regulatory codes.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
