About The Position The Operations Manager oversees the Halifax laboratory’s operations, focusing on production from sample receipt to results delivery. Key responsibilities include meeting financial and operational targets by driving growth and managing costs, ensuring high client satisfaction through fast turnaround times to support revenue growth, and fostering a workplace culture centered on employee engagement, safety, quality, innovation, client retention, and people development.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong safety culture by communicating/upholding the ALS HSE policies and programs
  • Actively support/lead the safety performance management of the business unit, including the achievement of HSE targets (individual targets and business targets)
  • Actively support the quality program mandates, pursue the resolution of all deviations/deficiencies identified through the quality program (e.g., CARs), and foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Support the development of the annual operating budget
  • Work with the broader regional management team to execute company priorities and strategies
  • Meet or exceed all budgeted financial performance targets including ROS and EBIT
  • Maintain a disciplined focus on cost management
  • Drive the execution of innovation projects supporting brand leadership and competitive advantages
  • Ensure productivity targets, particularly TAT, are met or exceeded with no compromise to the integrity of safety, quality, and reputation
  • Consistently monitor and adjust staffing resources against actual and forecast workflow
  • Actively participate in customer retention and business development campaigns, particularly those relating to the top existing customers and top potential opportunities
  • Ensure human resources are effectively managed including recruiting, performance management, employee relations, attendance promotion and staff scheduling
  • Maintain a continuous focus on employee development and cross training with a focus on identifying and growing key talent
  • Embody the ALS Core Values and foster a workplace culture that consistently reflects these values
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • An unwavering commitment to employee safety
  • Strong business acumen, coupled with the ability to interpret financial data, make effective decisions and execute any necessary changes
  • A strong orientation towards service quality, technical innovation, and continuous improvement
  • A history of actively engaging employees, supporting people development and growing key talent
  • Able to effectively manage change in a dynamic environment and balance multiple priorities
  • Excellent computer skills including use of MS Office Suite
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized BSc. degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in a production environment
  • Familiarity with the Canadian environmental industry an asset

Physical Demands

  • Able to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary tasks.
  • Able to work with a computer screen for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Able to wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odours.
