The Opportunity:
Medcan's Laboratory and Clinic Testing team is seeking a qualified and compassionate Medical Laboratory Technologist.
The ideal candidate will have at least 1+ years experience in a Core Laboratory setting, quality control and assurance, instrument and assay validation, and specimen handling.
This is a permanent Full-Time position scheduled for 8.5 hour shifts primarily between Monday to Friday within the hours of 6:30am and 7:30pm in the downtown Toronto clinic. This position maybe be required to work weekends on a scheduled basis.
There is the occasional requirement to travel to the clinic in Oakville (2275 Upper Middle Road E.) and the upcoming Markham clinic (600 Cochrane Drive) for lab support.
What You'll Do:
Specimen Handling & Testing
- Verify client identity and ensure all specimens are accurately labeled according to legal and laboratory requirements.
- Prepare and process specimens for manual and automated testing in compliance with laboratory standards.
- Perform, interpret, and release routine testing following SOPs, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Review and validate results, resolving critical values, delta checks, flags, and unexpected findings.
- Investigate discrepancies, specimen issues, and unexpected/critical results; take corrective action and escalate when required.
- Prepare and package specimens for transportation and manage send outs for external testing.
- Maintain accurate documentation and uphold patient confidentiality and data integrity.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Prepare and manage quality control, calibration, and reagent materials.
- Perform, review, and troubleshoot QC and calibration results; identify trends and resolve failures.
- Validate new QC materials and test assays.
- Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) and maintain required records.
- Identify incidents and non conformities, contribute to corrective action plans, and support continuous improvement.
- Maintain complete technical documentation, including instrument logs, maintenance records, QC files, and deviation reports.
- Participate in competency assessments, quality team meetings, and daily huddles.
- Participate in audits, inspections, incident investigations, and CAPA activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, standardization, and risk reduction.
- Follow all health, safety, and infection control policies.
Instrumentation & Technology
- Perform routine and advanced maintenance on laboratory analyzers; troubleshoot equipment and workflow issues.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for complex assay, instrument, and workflow challenges.
- Support evaluation, validation, and implementation of new technologies, including workflow design and staff training.
- Collaborate with vendors to ensure readiness, risk mitigation, and post implementation monitoring.
- Support LIS and middleware workflows (interfaces, autoverification rules, delta checks, reflex testing, critical value cutoffs).
- Manage laboratory inventory and supplies to maintain optimal stock levels.
Client Service & Communication
- Provide clear, compassionate communication to clients, explaining procedures and addressing concerns.
- Escort clients within the clinic as needed and contribute to a calm, supportive environment.
- Investigate and resolve client service issues and clinician inquiries with professionalism and discretion.
- Deliver a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive experience for all clients.
Teamwork, Training & Professional Development
- Assist with onboarding and training of new laboratory assistants, technicians, and phlebotomists.
- Engage in ongoing education to remain current with industry standards and best practices.
What You'll Need:
Education & Credentials
- Minimum one year of recent Core Laboratory experience in Chemistry and Hematology.
- Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent education/experience).
- Active CMLTO registration in good standing.
- Proof of CSMLS Professional Liability Insurance.
- TDG certification considered an asset.
Technical Expertise
- Strong proficiency in QC/QA, troubleshooting, equipment maintenance, and technical documentation.
- Experience with verification and validation of new methods, instruments, or systems.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and train staff.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse clients and colleagues.
- Proven ability to uphold safety, privacy, and confidentiality standards.
Professional Skills
- Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with consistent follow‑through.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment and adapt to changing needs.
- Experience supporting or maintaining LIS and middleware workflows, including interfaces, autoverification rules, and downtime processes.
- Familiarity with Clinisys, Sunquest, Meditech, or SCC Soft considered an asset.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365, Teams, and Outlook.
Position Pay Range
$73,699.00 - $101,335.00 CAD annually
Pay will be determined based on an analysis of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications within the role's compensation grade. Medcan's compensation ranges are determined by a combination of required qualifications and skills, market value, and internal equity. The above range pertains solely to the base compensation and is not inclusive of additional compensation details such as perks, benefits, and potential bonuses or incentives.
