The City is making a transformational cultural shift in how we approach Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). As a Leader within Occupational Health and Safety, your passion and commitment to building strong and trusted relationships with partners will be forefront of that cultural shift. This role oversees a team of four to eight Safety Advisors who will focus on supporting the development and sustainment of OHS systems within their embedded business unit(s). You will work with OHS managers, OHS leaders, and the assigned business unit(s) leadership team to champion the corporate programs, systems, and services with your partners. Primary duties include:

  • Lead as a strategic partner and trusted advisor to advance a positive safety culture for all City employees.
  • Be a collaborative leader in safety, providing subject matter expertise and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with members of the senior management team, leadership teams, OHS leaders, and other staff and interested parties to achieve outcomes.
  • Supervise a team of Safety Advisors who develop, monitor, educate, evaluate, and support the continuous improvement of the corporate safety management system within partner business unit(s).
  • Champion the proactive reduction of workplace injuries and illnesses by guiding and informing partner business units in the development and maintenance of their safety processes.
  • Work with Departmental and Business Unit Safety Implementation Teams (BUSITs), Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committees (JWHSCs) and employees to ensure a proactive approach to maintaining safety.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a related discipline, such as science, environmental studies, engineering, occupational health, safety or hygiene, business or planning.
  • At least 8 years of related experience that includes: managing an OHS management system from both a tactical and a strategic perspective, safety auditing, contractor management, project management, hazard control, incident management, and corporate reporting.
  • At least 4 years in a senior leadership OHS role that involves managing OHS professionals.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and the use of a personal vehicle for business purposes is required.
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation will be considered an asset.
  • A strategic thinker, empathetic, a natural leader, and can get projects across the finish line.
  • Success in this position requires continuous improvement through a proactive, risk-based approach to safety management and engaging and developing others.

Working Conditions: This position works a combination of field and office work.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Workstyle

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
