The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee and advance our accounting, budgeting, and auditing functions. Reporting to the Chief Finance Officer (CFO), this role provides leadership in financial operations, compliance, and strategic analysis while supervising accounting staff and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting across our organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional growth and accountability.
  • Oversee all accounting operations, including payroll, payables, receivables, journal entries, reconciliations, and statutory reporting.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to leadership and Board Committees.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and provincial laws, regulations, and not-for-profit accounting standards.
  • Support strategic planning with financial insights, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Manage year-end audits, external audit relationships, and compliance reporting for government-funded contracts (e.g., PDD, AHS, NWT, Nunavut).
  • Monitor cash flow and provide financial forecasts to the Senior Leadership Team and Audit Committee.
  • Establish, maintain, and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Represent Finance on cross-functional committees and support organization-wide quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on financial systems, reporting, and new technology or project implementations.
  • Authorize financial transactions including cheques, invoices, and purchase orders.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes impacting not-for-profit financial management.

What You Bring

-CPA designation (required).

  • Proven supervisory experience with strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience; non-profit/government-funded sector experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical expertise in financial analysis, budgeting, audit management, and compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of not-for-profit accounting standards and financial regulations.
  • Experience with Sage, UKG, and MS365 an asset.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and service excellence.
  • Satisfactory current criminal record check.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based role with occasional evening and weekend work as required.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Standard work week: 37.5 hours, with flexibility for organizational needs.
