Salary range for the position is $118,923 to $170,951. Interior Health establishes salaries within the minimum and maximum of the salary range based on consideration of the qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.
How will you create an impact:
The Director, Physician Compensation provides leadership and subject matter expertise to ensure the legal execution, administration, and payment of all clinical and administrative physician contracts. The Director ensures that all compensation practices comply with provincial and Interior Health (IH) policies. This role proactively resolves contract issues in collaboration with physicians, provincial leadership and technical experts, Executive Medical Directors, physician leaders, and directors in Clinical Operations. Effective engagement, change management, accounting principles, evaluation methods, and collaborative problem solving are essential to influencing day to day operations and resource decisions.
Working within a co management matrix structure, the Director shares responsibility with other IH Directors for the legal execution of physician clinical service and administrative contracts, ongoing performance monitoring, and evaluation of negotiated agreements. The Director ensures alignment with Interior Health (IH) and Ministry of Health (MOH) strategic priorities and supports the effective use of limited resources. The position also provides specialized expertise in physician compensation to address service delivery challenges and ensure sustainable, cost effective compensation models with clear contract language, financial controls, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
What will you work on:

Provides leadership to the Physician Compensation team, overseeing the full physician compensation payment process. Ensures strong financial stewardship of IH’s physician compensation budget, the annual MOH contract funding plan, and the establishment and maintenance of financial controls that minimize organizational risk.

Advises the Executive Director on the development and implementation of physician compensation strategies that support clinical service delivery plans. Provides expertise on budget management, cost‑benefit analysis, forecasting, and maximizing external funding and cost‑recovery opportunities.

Develops new IH physician compensation policies to address identified inequities within IH or across British Columbia.

Supports the development and leads the implementation of evidence‑based practice standards for physician compensation contracts across IH. Monitors key performance indicators and partners with management and physicians to identify performance issues and opportunities to enhance cost effectiveness.

Secures funding required for all physician contract types in accordance with MOH contract authorities.

Serves as Data Steward for physician compensation data, which includes collaboration with MOH to maintain accurate funding and utilization reporting. Responds to MOH and physician inquiries on behalf of IH. Coordinates site‑level and provincial information to provide timely, accurate responses and fosters effective communication between IH physicians and MOH regarding compensation issues.

Leads the implementation and monitoring of standardized physician compensation contracts that support service access and patient flow across the care continuum. Focuses on continuous improvement, standardization, elimination of waste, and maximizing value from limited resources.

Acts as IH’s primary liaison with MOH, HEABC Physician Services, and Doctors of BC regarding physician compensation matters and dispute resolution. Advocates for IH physicians in the development and refinement of provincial compensation models and contractual strategies.

Responds to Communications and Public Affairs requests for data and information to support media inquiries. Ensures accurate interpretation of compensation information and assists with preparing responses and media releases.

Manages all aspects of IH physician compensation administration, including contract amendments, approvals, renewals, billing and payment processes, and utilization reporting. Ensures continuous quality improvement, evaluates cost‑effectiveness of compensation models, and aligns expenditures with budget plans.

Develops and manages the annual budget for the portfolio, adjusts operational plans to meet financial targets, approves expenditures, and prepares fiscal summaries and reports.

Oversees human resource functions for the Physician Compensation department, including recruitment, performance management, discipline, and termination. Leads staff development through education, training, mentorship, and succession planning.

Represents IH on provincial committees and working groups related to physician compensation and related policy areas.

Ensures a healthy and safe work environment by aligning with IH’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, complying with applicable regulations, responding to WorkSafeBC requests, identifying and mitigating hazards, ensuring staff training compliance, and conducting incident investigations with required corrective actions. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in a business field accompanied by advanced education or experience in accounting or contract management.

A CPA accounting designation is strongly preferred.

A minimum of 7 years of progressive management experience working in a large, complex environment, preferably in healthcare.
Skills and Abilities
- Exceptional relationship‑building and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, build consensus, and present complex information clearly and concisely.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, even under tight timelines and shifting priorities.
- In‑depth knowledge of physician compensation models, provincial funding sources and processes, and PMA contract language.
- Strong understanding of financial management and business planning processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, supervise, and partner effectively with staff and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead complex projects and initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a matrix management environment.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development, including identifying learning needs and maintaining competency through relevant education and training.
- Flexibility regarding work hours, location, and methods of delivering responsibilities, including the ability to manage unpredictable workloads.
- Valid BC Driver’s License.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
