We are hiring a Family Worker in our Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Program! JOIN US at CMHA-YRSS; where innovation and community mental health care intersect!
Closing Date: October 24, 2025
Permanent: Full-time, 35 hours per week, evening hours and weekends may be required. Emphasis on delivering family education groups.
Salary: $56,444-$58,504 per annum. *The starting salary reflects the first 2 steps in a 7-step salary grid.
Location: The Family Worker for the Early Psychosis Intervention Program will work from the Aurora Office located at 15150 Yonge Street on the days of on-site work and will be required to travel within York Region & South Simcoe for client meetings and staff training or other meetings.
Working Conditions: Office work, community settings, meetings in clients home or on the phone and travel with clients
Job Profile: The Family Worker works with the families of clients who are living with mental health challenges and mental illness. . The Family Worker works collaboratively with the program team to identify strengths and needs of family members to develop long term goals to support the client’s recovery. The Family Worker will provide psychoeducation and system navigation to build the family members understanding of psychosis related conditions and the impact it has on daily functioning.
Responsibilities:
- Assess and identify the family’s needs in conjunction with the family, client, and case manager
- Assist families in creating support plans using a bio-psychosocial framework
- Provide individual counselling support and education to family members
- Deliver family education groups. (Group facilitation skills)
- Keep current on best practices as it relates to family support
- Prepare family-oriented resources for distribution
- Maintain a caseload, recognizing the need for extensive travel in some rural areas and intensiveness of contact with specific clients.
- Have extensive knowledge of family systems theory, mental health and mental illness, including dual diagnosis (mental health and developmental disability and/or traumatic head injury) symptoms, presentation and intervention.
- Demonstrate an understanding of developmental issues and dynamics of youth and young adults and their families.
- Conduct initial interviews that include collaboration with the client in taking a psychosocial history outlining demographics (gender, age, language), health, (psychiatric, medical, recent/current treatments), informally assesses mental status, assesses current strengths and needs, and helps the client to identify goals and informal and formal supports and services.
- Inform the client and family of confidentiality requirements and the limitations of confidentiality.
- Collect relevant information from the client, and with the client’s permission, from family members and other service providers in order to collaboratively develop an empowerment plan that incorporates Recovery principles.
- Identify any cultural or other issues and respond in a sensitive manner.
- Be familiar with a wide range of formal services and informal supports to link clients to services, supports and resources in the community.
- Participate in case conferences in collaboration with the client and family.
- Provide counseling support concerning illness and symptom management, problem solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal skill building, and goal attainment.
- Provide information and education to family members, other agency personnel and community members concerning Recovery principles and practices, mental health, illness, coping strategies, and available resources.
- Participate in collaborative plans for termination of services with the family that includes referral to community and professional resources, as well as opportunities for community engagement.
Requirements:
- Relevant undergraduate degree or diploma in social work, counselling, psychology or a related field
- Current registration with OCSWSSW or a regulatory body under the Regulated Health Professions Act
- Experience providing supportive counselling to individuals and groups and working with community health or social service organizations, with a emphasis on Community-Based Mental Health.
- Previous experience working with families is an asset
- Experience in early intervention is preferred
- Demonstrated experience in (co)facilitating groups
- Knowledge of the Ontario Mental Health Act, mental health reform principles, the Substitute Decisions Act, the Health Care Consent Act and PHIPPA requirements
- Ability to apply Recovery principles and empowerment-oriented philosophies and practices in work with consumers
- Extensive knowledge of supports and services in York Region and South Simcoe, including formal and informal resources
- Knowledge of systemic issues such as poverty, unemployment, stigma, medications and the isolation felt by individuals with serious mental health issues and their families
- Ability to observe boundaries, engage in appropriate emotional regulation, refrain from dual relationships with consumers, maintain confidentiality, and engage in reasonable self-care strategies designed to reduce stress by balancing work/life responsibilities
- A second language reflecting the local community is an asset
- A valid Canadian driver’s license, a minimum $1,000,000 third party liability insurance
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check)
This position reports to and is supervised by the Manager, People and Teams.
