About the role

The working schedule is from Monday to Thursday from 6:45 am to 3:00 pm and Friday from 6:45 am to 11:45 am. Reporting to the Garage Foreman the mechanic will assume the following functions:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The employee performs various manual tasks in the field of mechanics, including checks, preventive maintenance, repairs on all types of motor vehicles, motorized equipment and other equipment powered by gasoline, diesel or electric motors. He performs the necessary mechanical, electrical and electronic adjustments, replacements, modifications and repairs. The function involves knowing how to drive all kinds of vehicles in order to move them inside and outside the machine shop.

The work is carried out under the direct supervision of the foreman or his representative and requires professional training as well as prior experience in heavy machinery mechanics. The employee receives his work in the form of verbal instructions and / or in writing, plans or diagrams and completes the activity reports according to the requirements of the foreman or his representative. It is required to carry out the work entrusted to them in accordance with the directives and practices of the trade.

TASKS TO BE PERFORMED

  • Detects the nature of defects, determines their causes and determines if the parts affected should be replaced, repaired or reconditioned; prepares the lists of replacement parts according to the catalogues

  • Verifies, removes, takes apart, reassembles and puts back engines, carburetors, transmissions, steerings, differential brakes, clutches, springs, pivots and hydraulic and hydrostatic systems.

  • Aligns and balances wheels using equipment designed for that purpose; replaces defective parts: bearings, axles, shock absorbers.

  • Performs minor maintenance and repair work on ignitions, exhaust manifolds, cooling systems, headlights and beams.

  • Carries out necessary repairs to new mechanisms, using the indications provided by the instruction manuals; installs auxiliary mechanisms on various pieces of equipment.

  • Performs mechanical work required for the maintenance and repair of various equipment, heavy or light: snowblowers, tractors, self-graders, mechanical brooms, trucks, cars, motorcycles, compressors, mowers, pumps, etc…

  • Carries out simple arc welding or oxy-acetylene repair work and when required, uses oxy-acetylene torches for the cutting or heating of metals.

  • Adjusts and installs electric components on engines (injection), transmission (electronic brain), brakes (A.B.S.), injection systems, etc.

  • Takes apart, repairs, calibrates and replaces mechanisms for windshield-wiper fluid, windshield wipers, tachometers, bench seats, window regulators and other similar types of mechanisms.

  • Takes apart, verifies, repairs and reassembles motor-vehicle heating systems, defrosters and air conditioning systems.

  • Removes doors; replaces or repairs defective hinges, locks and windshield wiper mechanisms; replaces and adjusts doors; replaces or repairs handles; installs rear-view mirrors and sun visors.

  • Installs and seals windows and checks the tightness of the joints.

  • Takes apart, verifies and reassembles various devices, instruments and tools, such as starters, alternators, batteries, etc.

  • Drives all types of motorized vehicles (requiring class 3 driver’s liscence) that have undergone repairs, inside or outside the garage, observing the safety rules. If necessary, performs road tests to diagnose problems or to verify the repair performed;

  • Machines component parts using various mechanical devices; calibrates instruments.

  • Occasionally carries out work involving simple body repair, paint retouching and the application of an anti-corrosion product.

  • Uses computers to diagnose different problems;

  • Modifies, repairs, manufactures, various body parts;

  • Fabricates various tools adapted to the Town's vehicle;

  • Modifies some vehicles to update them;

  • Keeps his work place clean;

  • Ensures the proper maintenance of the equipment and tools under his responsibility by carrying out the necessary verification and maintenance. Reports any need or anomaly to his superior.

  • Receives work in the form of verbal or written instructions and completes activity reports as required by the foreman.

Required Skills

  • Know how to read, write, speak French and have knowledge of English;

  • know how to count;

  • Have a valid professional qualification certificate recognized by the City or by the Directorate General of Labor of Quebec (diploma of a school of trades of the automobile with concentration in heavy machinery or commercial vehicles and diesel);

  • Know how to read and interpret plans and diagrams;

  • Hold a class 3 driver's license;

  • Have a good knowledge of standards and safety measures specific to the job;

  • Possess the ability to use the tools required to perform the tasks.

The salary is between $44.46 and $46.28 per hour (groupe 18).
