##Responsibilities

The Research Summer Student will provide higher level support to assist the Research Associate in Dr. Strong's ALS lab at Robarts Research Institute in lab duties examining the consequence of mutations in a disease associated gene. Previous lab experience and a strong interest in examining how tau proteins contribute to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and chronic traumatic encephalopathy are required.
Duties will include tissue culture of mammalian cells, transfections, protein lysate preparation, immunoprecipitations, PAGE, DNA preparations, PCR and gel electrophoresis. Applicants will be expected to contribute at lab meetings and journal club meetings as well as assist in preparing common/shared lab stock solutions and items. The incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their work team and other members of the Western community.
Duties will include:

  1. Conduct mammalian cell culture, maintaining cell lines and performing transfections as directed by the Research Associate;
  2. Prepare protein lysates and perform immunoprecipitations followed by Western Blotting for specific antigens as per SOPs;
  3. Prepare DNA and RNA samples, and perform various molecular techniques including PCR, reverse transcriptions and agarose gel electrophoresis as directed;
  4. Assist in the preparation of standard lab stock solutions and common stock items (antibiotic containing LB plates etc) under direction of the Lab Technician;
  5. Participate in lab meetings and journal club meetings with other members of the lab.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Must be a student returning to studies in the fall; applicants must also be working towards completing their Bachelor's degree in a biomedical or biochemistry related course of study in university.

Experience:

  • Previous work experience in a similar role or with at least 4 months of previous lab employment experience in addition to regular lab courses, with some experience with the above listed duties.

  • Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western’s policies and procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized work environment
  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
