Qulliq Energy Corporation

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory's communities.

Senior Electrical Technologist (QEC 25-030)

Iqaluit, Nunavut

Reporting to the Manager, Protection, Control, and Metering, the Senior Electrical Technologist maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and designs automation, and controls for diesel engines and generator protection systems, and updates and maintains all SCADA systems across Nunavut.

Work is structured by the Canadian electrical code and related Industry standards, lock out/tag out and similar procedures, safety handbook and corporate/GN financial management, HR, purchasing policies and procedures. The incumbent will be required to prioritize and delegate work to other Electrical Technologists to ensure tasks are completed and objectives achieved. The incumbent has direct authority over ordering stock or standard parts required for a job, deciding to drop customer power, if required and in emergencies, can make decisions required to get the power back online. Must seek supervisory approval for ordering non-standard parts or equipment, making decisions that affect system reliability in non-emergency situations, modifying equipment designs and travelling to communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Travels to territorial generation facilities to investigate and troubleshoot system failures and conduct maintenance on equipment to ensure efficient operation of protection, control, and metering systems.
  • Manages, organizes, and prepares documentation to support modifications and upgrades to new and existing control systems in territorial generation facilities.
  • Reviews and recommends changes to automation processes, writes programming logic, Control Narratives and specifications, and ensures control systems meet plant specifications.
  • Coordinates with engineers, project managers, maintenance crews, operators, and contractors to provide technical support and advice for capital and recoverable projects.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders in Engineering, Operations, and Finance departments in order to plan and execute maintenance and repairs of control systems in territorial generation facilities.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • Three (3) year advanced diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.

  • Ten (10) years' experience including experience with high voltage, bulk power distribution/transmission.

  • Five (5) years' experience in designing and costing projects.

  • Three years of experience designing, updating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing protection, control, and metering systems.

Assets:

  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or Certified Technician (C.Tech.) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture and is asset.
  • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French is an asset.

A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $130,145.60 to $153,192.00 and a northern living allowance of $16,008.00 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined-benefit pension program. Accommodation is not guaranteed at this point and will be allocated when available. This position is included in the Nunavut Employee's Union.

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
