Description What you’ll be doing

Wellness Companion Volunteer Partners Community Health (PCH) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization focused on bringing healthcare services together around the needs of people living in Mississauga and West Toronto. PCH manages Wellbrook Place, two state-of-the-art Long Term Care homes (Wellbrook Place East and Wellbrook Place West) and Seniors’ Integrated Hub at 2180 Speakman Drive in Mississauga. The homes have a combined 632 beds and are a part of PCH’s larger strategy that introduces innovative and inclusive programs and services and new models of care delivery.

Purpose: The Wellness Companion plays a vital role in enhancing the social and emotional wellbeing of older adults attending the Spend The Day with Us program in the Integrated Seniors’ Hub. This program service seniors 65+ from the community who are on waitlists for long-term care and benefit from health-oriented social programming. The Wellness Companion helps foster a welcoming environment by engaging participants in friendly conversation, offering companionship, and supporting a sense of belonging.

Time Commitment: Minimum commitment of one 2-3 hour shift per week for a duration of 6 months.

Shifts available during STDWU program hours Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet and orient new and returning participants to the program space
  • Circulate throughout the space to offer friendly conversation and social engagement
  • Encourage participation in STDWU activities (e.g. group exercise, wellness workshops, games)
  • Support staff in creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere
  • Observe and report any concerns about participants’ wellbeing to program staff
  • Promote dignity, respect, and person-centered engagement at all times

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older;
  • Friendly, approachable, and compassionate demeanor
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Comfortable engaging in one-on-one and small group conversation with older adults
  • Sensitive to the needs of seniors living with physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges
  • Dependable and able to work independently under staff supervision
  • Previous experience with older adults or in healthcare/community settings is an asset

Training Requirements: Pre-boarding (online learning)

In-person Volunteer Orientation session

Training in communication with older adults and dementia-friendly practices

Ongoing support and supervision from the Volunteer Coordinator and program team
