About the Role

Reporting to the EVP, the VP, Business Development is responsible for the acquisition of new business and opportunities for profitable work, and brings a wealth of relationships with owners (private and public) and the community of consultants, representing the company at events and planning the acquisition process strategically. The incumbent has extensive successful experience acquiring work through diverse service delivery approaches suited to ongoing maintenance programs, turnaround execution models, and small capital projects. This includes strategies such as long-term service agreements, master service contracts, bundled maintenance and upgrade programs, and collaborative project execution models that emphasize responsiveness, cost efficiency, and strong client relationships.

As a VP of Business Development at Graham you will:

  • Develop short- and long-term strategies for the acquisition of new work, including market analysis and client classification.
  • Network as required to obtain new prospects; attend conferences and industry events.
  • Maintain awareness of upcoming projects.
  • Maintain internal communication with other Graham Business Development leaders to ensure coordination of actions and consistency of messaging.
  • Prepare teams, with special attention to the need for JV partners and consultants.
  • Lead the preparation of Project Pursuit Approval documentation including estimating of bid costs and identification of internal resources for bidding and execution, in collaboration with the District Manager or VP Operations.
  • Work with the District Manager or VP Operations to obtain internal approvals to pursue.
  • Research the competition and be aware of which jobs they are pursuing.
  • Ensure analytics are collected and compiled for past projects similar to those the company is targeting.
  • Lead the preparation of responses to RFQs and RFEOIs, as required.
  • Lead client presentations and business development meetings.
  • Approve the zipper plan to establish clear lines of communication between the project team and client team.
  • Assist with other strategic initiatives and process development / improvement, as needed.
  • Develop a strategy for acquiring new work aligned with business unit revenues.
  • Negotiate bidding costs with partners and ensure bidding cost forecasts are accurate.
  • Approve the business development events calendar and budget and delegate event planning to the team.
  • Participate in executive planning with a focus on minimizing risk and maximizing profit.
  • Analyze potential upcoming projects in terms of likelihood, chances of success for Graham, anticipated risks and rewards, and consistency with Graham's short-and long-term strategies.
  • Maintain good relations and communication with potential client partners, consultants, and facility management companies.
  • Act as the face of Graham at networking events.
  • Influence Graham’s brand development and marketing strategy.
  • Convey a message which is in line with Graham’s overall strategy.
  • Drive Graham as a content provider for industry events.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Completion of a university bachelor program in a technical, business, or scientific field of study; degree in Business, Engineering, or Architecture is preferred.
  • 12-15 years of experience in Business Development or as a Project Manager or Construction Manager.
  • Technology association accreditation is an asset.
  • Existing network of owners, consultants, key subcontractors, and the potential JV partners in Canada.
  • Strong relationships and expertise with P3 agencies would be an asset.
  • Proven experience with demonstrating the capabilities and proficiencies of a company.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of design processes, construction matters, finance, and contracts.
  • Good understanding of other parties’ expectations and genuine interest in creating win-win solutions.
  • Understanding of complex situations involving multiple parties with diverging interests.
  • Excellent negotiating skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills, and ability to view business opportunities before they materialize.
  • Exceptional listening skills and ability to gain information and intelligence and know what projects are upcoming.
  • Strong ability to read clients and know how best to communicate with them.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Toolbox, and CIMS; familiar with BIM software.

Working Conditions

  • This role is primarily office-based, though travel will be required at times.
