##Job summary

The Desktop Technician provides expert support in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing end-user hardware, software, and peripherals. This role is responsible for imaging and configuring devices, installing applications, resolving network connectivity issues, and delivering both on-site and remote support to ensure optimal performance across the University of Ottawa Heart Institute’s (UOHI) systems.

Beyond daily technical support, the Desktop Technician contributes to the design and implementation of end-user technology solutions, develops, and refines processes related to endpoint technologies, and proactively recommends improvements that enhance efficiency, user experience, and overall service quality.

##Key responsibilities

  • Provide high quality, professional, service-oriented Level IT desktop support to the end-user community.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems associated with common desktop operating systems, custom and purchased software applications, and computer hardware, mobile, peripheral, and related devices.
  • Deploy desktop, laptop, and workstation class computers to the user community using common deployment and configuration tools.
  • Monitor and document escalated incidents and Service Requests in the service management tool.
  • Maintain accurate and complete asset records in the service management tool.
  • Design, build and implement endpoint configurations for operating systems and applications across both virtual and physical desktop environments.
  • Contact external vendors, suppliers, and relevant corporate authorities when required to diagnose and solve PC and related software and hardware problems or implement new technology.
  • Provide ownership and participate in the successful execution of end user-related project activities.
  • Participate in strategy/roadmap creation, identify, and recommend technology solutions to meet business needs.
  • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing accurate documentation steps for installation, maintenance, and configuration activities.
  • Interfaces with other business units to diagnose issues and plan improvements in service. Acts as a liaison with clients, participating in meetings to ensure client needs are met.
  • Communicate effectively (in oral and written form) with a variety of individuals, work well within small and large team environments.

##Required qualifications

  • 3-7 years of hands-on experience in desktop support, helpdesk, or IT end-user support.
  • Proficiency with Windows operating systems, with the ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, and repair workstations.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365/Office 365 applications.
  • Understanding of basic networking principles, including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPN, Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
  • Experience using ticketing system, such as Service Now or similar.
  • Ability to install, configure, and support hardware and peripheral, including printers, scanners, docking stations, and mobile devices.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills, with the ability to resolve issues independently and escalate when needed.
  • Experience maintaining accurate documentation, including installation instructions, configuration procedures, and troubleshooting steps.

##Preferred qualifications

  • Comp TIA A+ certification, demonstrating baseline technical competency.
  • ITIL v4 Foundation certification or familiarity with ITIL processes.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

##Working conditions

  • Ability to work on-site full-time.
  • Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional after hours may be required based on project demands.
  • On-call participation is optional and offered on a voluntary basis.
  • Role includes minor physical tasks such as moving or unboxing equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and SLA-driven expectations.
