The Opportunity

The City of St. John's is currently accepting applications for the Full Time Permanent position of Manager of Laboratory Services, within the Water and Wastewater Division, reporting to the Director of Environmental Services.

Accountabilities

  • Manage all laboratory operations of the Water and Wastewater Division, ensuring compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and regulatory standards, maintaining quality assurance, and managing staff and resources
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations including scheduling, workflow, and resource allocation
  • Monitor and evaluate laboratory performance to ensure accuracy and reliability of results
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate laboratory staff, ensuring effective team coordination and performance.
  • Oversee procurement and inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Develop and manage the laboratory budget
  • Address water quality concerns from residents and businesses serviced by the Water and Wastewater Division and taking appropriate actions when required.
  • Implement and monitor OHS protocols among laboratory staff
  • Contribute to long-term planning for the Water & Wastewater Division and identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science, or a college diploma with a focus on Marine Environmental Technology or Water Quality.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in an ISO 17025:2017 laboratory setting conducting physical, chemical (organic and inorganic), biochemical, and bacteriological analyses related to water and wastewater, including supervisory experience overseeing laboratory staff and ensuring compliance with quality standards.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Familiarity with laboratory management software and data analysis tools.
  • Provincial certification in Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection would be considered an asset.
  • Possession of a Class 5 Drivers License and use of a personal vehicle for business purposes as frequent travel throughout the City is necessary to carryout duties.

Hours of Work

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
40 hours per week
As a member of the Management Group, this position may be required to work outside of these hours when required.
