Job Summary

As an integral part of Calgary Economic Development’s Business Development Team, theBusiness Development Manager is responsible for supporting business retention, expansion, and investment attraction to the Calgary region.

The role requires proactive engagement with local and international Agribusiness, Transportation & Logistics companies to promote Calgary as a preferred destination for foreign direct investment that leads to attraction and expansion of companies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote Calgary on the local and global stage, acting as a representative for the organization and coordinating business development efforts with appropriate internal and external partners

  • Understand, create, and seek out new value propositions that position Calgary and assigned sectors for business attraction, expansion and retention purposes

  • Proactively engage with partner organizations / clients to assess their needs and facilitate solutions; continually generate leads and follow up to prospect high potential target companies

  • Manage co-agency relationships with partners organizations to ensure alignment, leverage solutions and avoid duplication of efforts

  • Manage a healthy and active funnel of investment opportunities, acting as a single point of contact for investors; identify key metrics upon which to measure success for development in this industry

  • Work closely with CED’s Investor Experience Team in servicing our clients (e.g., real estate availability, market intelligence, workforce development support)

  • Use CRM to track all client opportunities and touchpoints

  • Formulate, oversee, and evaluate short- and medium-term business development plans centered around strengthening the industry value proposition, positioning for emerging sub-sectors, enhancing local talent pool, and deepening the sales pipeline

  • Understand, interpret, and translate emerging industry trends to influence medium to long-term business development plans

  • Prepare customized investor attraction packages, compiling relevant information for a key opportunity

  • Formulate and present the business case to target audience, responding to inquiries and actively listening for opportunities

  • Act as a spokesperson and storyteller to profile Calgary’s strengths in Agribusiness, Transportation & Logistics, as well as other related industries

  • Compile business intelligence and other available data for enhanced investment into Calgary

  • Reach out to local and global markets through Trade Commissioner Service, intermediaries or lead generation consultants

Education

Undergraduate degree in Marketing, Communications, Economics, Political Science, Commerce or related diploma.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Business Development, Agriculture or related field

  • Minimum of 2 years experience of account leadership or managing sales team.

  • A good understanding of economic development or a membership in industry associations is an added advantage.

Key Competencies

  • Experience with CMS and CRM platforms

  • Interpersonal skills / strong verbal communications skills and ability to negotiate and persuade.

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and effectiveness in, sales and marketing from lead generation through to complex deal strategy.

  • Understanding of the local business environment, government, industry, culture, and regulatory environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the local and international market / ecosystem and ability to build relationships with key international stakeholders (government/agency/associations).

  • Proven project management skills with the ability to multi-task several projects at once.

  • Decision making capability to source and select appropriate projects for Calgary Economic Development and deliver timely results in a responsible and accountable manner.

  • Exceptional business relationship management skills with a demonstrated commitment to customer service.

  • Effective at working independently and as a member of a team with an ability to collaborate and build consensus across the business.

  • Experience working with politically sensitive and confidential information.

  • Understanding of international trade.

  • Ability to travel globally.
