Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Health & Safety, this position performs a broad range of tasks involving development, planning, and coordination of activities related to the implementation and function of the Occupational Health and Safety Program. The Health and Safety Coordinator ensures that the college is following all applicable regulatory agency requirements relating to safety, occupational health, ergonomic assessments, risk assessments, WHMIS and emergency response plans.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Fosters a culture of health and safety through the following:
  • Performs regular workplace inspections.
  • Responds to and investigates safety concerns and complaints from staff and/or employer and takes appropriate action.
  • Aids in investigations related to accidents and injuries that occur in the workplace.
  • Liaises and coordinates with Human Resources (HR) accident investigations notes that may lead to employee misconduct and/or discipline.
  • Identifies and evaluates potential health and safety hazards, recommends corrective action to Manager.
  • Prepares related reports including WorkSafe Form 7 (Employer’s Report of Injury) submissions. Liaises with Manager and HR on cases of appeals or claim objections.
  • Aids in the development of materials, presentations, and information to support safety orientation and delivers training programs to employees as required.
  • Coordinates annual hearing tests.
  • Coordinates purchase of personal protection equipment for staff.
  • Maintains inventory of first aid supplies as deficiencies noted.
  • Conducts monthly audit of first aid reporting and documents finding to Manager, Health & Safety.
  1. Supports the Manager, Health and Safety with the administration of the OHS Program and its’ elements, including but not limited to:
  • Workplace ergonomic evaluations and audits.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)/ Globalized Harmonized System (GHS).
  • Occupational First Aid Attendants (OFAA).
  • New employee safety orientation.
  • Inspections/ Investigations.
  1. Supports the Occupational Health and Safety Committee:
  • Provides recommendations on policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety and ensures compliance.
  • Assists in organizing and compiling reports on incidents and injuries, concerns, and ergonomic issues for meetings.
  1. Informs the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan:
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Manager, Health & Safety in support of the College’s emergency preparedness and response goals.
  • Provides input to the Manager related to Safety on the Emergency Management Plans.
  • Participates in the coordination and exercise of planned drills.
  1. Performs other related duties as required.

Education & Experience:

  • Two (2) year diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in occupational health & safety in a public sector environment, preferably in an educational setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience developing and delivering a WHMIS program.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • OFA Level 2 and/or First Aid instructor designation is an asset.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office and complex databases with the ability to generate reports, comparative charts, educational posters, and a variety of business materials.
  • Effective public speaking, presentation and training skills are necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills with highly developed level of integrity, discretion, and ability to maintain strict confidentiality as well as handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Excellent understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, Codes, Acts, and legislation is essential with the ability to analyse and interpret technical documents.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office and complex databases with the ability to generate reports, comparative charts, educational posters and a variety of business materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as work independently.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule in emergency situations.
  • Ability to travel between campuses.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, relating effectively to faculty and staff of various backgrounds, both internal and external.
  • Proven ability to develop and coordinate safety programs and to handle safety incidents/investigations with good judgement, confidence, and authority.
  • Proven ability to successfully promote a culture of Health & Safety.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and plan work activities with minimal supervision, respond quickly and professionally with clear judgment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to prepare clear, concise and accurate observation and investigation reports, business correspondence and program documentation such as technical procedures, guidelines and manuals.

Compensation beyond the mid-point requires approval by the Public Sector Employers’ Council Secretariat (PSEC).
