Job Information
The Superintendent is the Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Head accountable to the Council and the Government of the Northwest Territories for the conduct and operation of South Slave schools. Reporting to the Chairperson of the South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) this position is an exciting opportunity and requires a results-oriented educational leader with integrity and a vision for shaping the future direction of a northern, multi-cultural school division and improving outcomes for all.
Serving approximately 1200 students in Fort Smith, Hay River, Fort Resolution, Lutsel K'e, and K'atlodeeche, the SSDEC has over 250 staff and an annual budget of over $24 million. The award-winning Division is proud of its commitment to school improvement and student achievement through the provision of evidence-based, culturally relevant, and inclusive programs. The collaborative working environment has been key to building and maintaining a culture of respect and learning.
The Superintendent has responsibility for JK-12 programs, including curriculum/program implementation, staff in-service, student support services, capital planning, occupational health and safety, school improvement planning, and regional priorities (literacy/reading, numeracy, and Indigenous language and culture). The position includes direct support and supervision of the following positions: assistant superintendent, financial comptroller, executive assistant, public affairs coordinator, five JK-12 regional program consultants, and seven school principals.
The Superintendent should have:
- a commitment to continuous improvement, with knowledge of educational change literature, an ability to promote evidence-based school improvement and instructional practices that result in improved student learning, and a proven record of implementation of successful educational initiatives;
- strong group facilitation skills, an orientation to providing support and empowering staff, and a history of leading by example within a team environment;
- excellent communication abilities, a high degree of technological proficiency, a sensitivity to Indigenous culture and history, and an ability and commitment to community involvement and developing collaborative partnerships to supplement existing school programs and supports;
- leadership accomplishments in the areas of school(s) leadership, organization, curriculum, instruction and assessment, and the ability to analyze and interpret data, and coordinate efforts within a culture-based and inclusive environment;
- initiative with a tremendous work ethic, a high degree of flexibility, an ability to work positively under pressure, and a willingness to travel extensively.
Key Qualifications:
Completion of a Bachelor of Education degree or related degree. A Masters Degree in Educational Administration or Education Leadership, supplemented by a minimum of seven years of classroom teaching experience in a JK-12 school setting and a minimum of seven years of administrative experience in a JK-12 school setting.
Eligibility for an NWT Teaching Certificate and NWT Principal Certification within two years of hire, are also required.
