Position Summary

The Customs Rater supports TENAQUIP's import operations by accurately classifying, rating, and processing import transactions while ensuring compliance with CBSA regulations, customs legislation, trade agreements, and company policies. The role works closely with Purchasing, Supply Chain, Carriers, Vendors, and Government Agencies to facilitate the timely and compliant movement of imported products into Canada.
This position requires strong customs knowledge, attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple import transactions in a fast-paced distribution environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assign and validate Harmonized System (HS) tariff classifications and applicable duty treatments. Verify customs valuation, country of origin, and free trade agreement eligibility. Review commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading, and supporting customs documentation. Coordinate customs clearance activities with carriers, freight forwarders, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Process customs documentation through internal systems to facilitate timely customs release and delivery. Monitor and resolve customs rejections and documentation discrepancies. Maintain accurate customs records, certificates, tariff classifications, and supporting import documentation. Maintain customs profiles and import-related master data within company systems. Provide support and guidance to internal teams regarding customs requirements, duties, tariffs, trade agreements, and regulatory compliance. Stay informed on changes to CBSA regulations, customs legislation, tariffs, trade agreements, and import requirements. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to customs compliance, import processes, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
College diploma or degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, International Trade, Business Administration, Customs Administration, or a related field. CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) designation strongly preferred. Minimum 2–3 years of experience in customs rating, customs brokerage, import/export operations, logistics, or international trade. Working knowledge of CBSA regulations, customs valuation, tariff classification, and trade compliance requirements. Experience with CARM, Free Trade Agreements, and customs-related documentation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. Experience with ERP systems, customs software, and supply chain platforms is considered an asset. Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.
