The Opportunity:
Make your mark while you grow your career! As the Project Engineer – Sustaining Capital, you will provide expertise, problem solving and engineering solutions for our Albian facility. As the successful candidate, you will lead a cross-functional and multidisciplinary project team to deliver a portfolio of projects totaling ~$10 to $50 million. This includes leading and supporting both CAPEX and OPEX projects for the Albian Oil Sands facility, leading teams to complete engineering studies, design basis memorandum, execution planning, detailed design, procurement and contracting, and construction/execution. You will have accountability to ensure that the safety, environmental, scope, cost and schedule goals are met. The Project Engineer may own the project from scoping through to start-up and will work closely with Value Stream Facilities Engineers once scopes are identified.
- Job location: Calgary, Alberta
- Shift schedule: 5 x 2 (Monday to Friday), with frequent trips to the Albian facility for team meetings and field walk-downs of project scopes
- During critical project phases such a construction and/or plant outages, extended field presence at Albian will be required
- Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:
- Lead and develop execution plans, budgets and cost estimates, schedules, risk registers, and resource plans for projects within the portfolio
- Work closely with key internal stakeholders to finalize the Project Scoping documents and Project Charter prior to the kick-off of the project
- Other responsibilities include:
- Lead RFP, contractor engagement, EPC/service provider and vendor selection processes
- Lead the review and delivery engineering deliverables and CWPs from internal and/or external resources and ensure all designs are reviewed with all stakeholders and feedback is incorporated
- Select and provide oversight of discipline engineers, service providers, supply management professionals, technology licensors, equipment, materials and construction contractors
- Review project progress, act when required to rectify issues that arise, and provide routine project status reports to internal and external stakeholders
- Be aware of, and work according to, applicable guidelines, directives and regulations concerning the Environment, Safety, AER, and the Alberta Boilers Safety Association
- Identify opportunities to reduce risk or reduce costs to enhance plant reliability, safety, and environmental performance and implement opportunities for operating cost reduction and optimization
- Troubleshoot and optimize Albian facilities and equipment
- Provide project management and technical support to operations staff on projects arising from Value Stream concerns as communicated by the Facilities Engineer
- Review engineering drawings and provide technical and project management expertise
- Health, Safety and Environment:
- Comply with all Health and Safety Requirements established by Canadian Natural
- Know and comply with all regulations and legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards
- Follow safe work procedures and ensure all personnel comply.
- Report any injury or illness immediately
- Report unsafe acts and conditions.
- Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and is worn where and when required
What You Bring to the Role:
- Professional Engineer with at least 10 years of experience in project engineering and construction in the oil and gas industry
- Proven ability to execute projects through the full project cycle
- Front-end project development/economics, field experience, and managing medium to large size projects are definite assets, as well as previous experience in oil sands facilities
- Strong leadership, written and verbal communication skills, organizational and team skills, and a strong work ethic are required
- Ability to analyze, prioritize and deliver required results on a cost-effective basis
- Self-starter, ability to manage multiple projects at one time
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational and team skills, and a strong work ethic are required
