About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE

Locations: Village Commons, 610 8 Ave SE Wage: $18 per hour

Hours: 30 to 37.5 hours per week Length of Placement: 8-week placement

We have four positions available, with start dates of May 4, June 8, June 29, and July 6.

Community Hub Support Workers (CHSW) are part of Carya’s Village Commons team and support individuals using the facility. Often the first point of contact for the public, they play a key role in welcoming visitors, responding to inquiries, supporting events, and ensuring excellent customer service for those accessing services, renting space, or enjoying the community hub.

These staff members are also essential to the facility’s day-to-day operations. Their responsibilities include assisting with special events and space rentals, providing kitchen support as needed, and performing light cleaning duties. This includes preparing spaces for activities, cleaning up afterward, and securing the facility at the end of the day.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Reception & Administration

  • Welcome visitors to the Village Commons in a friendly and hospitable manner, creating a positive first impression.
  • Answer incoming calls and direct them appropriately, and guide individuals to appointments, meetings, and space bookings or rentals, including providing tours as needed.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the reception area, process payments for rentals and services, and support general administrative tasks such as managing mail, monitoring emails, voicemail, and faxes, and assisting staff as required.

Community, Programs & Operations Support

  • Foster connection among facility users, including residents of the East Village neighbourhood, and contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment.

  • Support programs, events, and activities through setup and teardown, audio/visual assistance, and general event support.

  • Assist with basic kitchen setup and cleanup for classes, and provide program facilitation support as needed (e.g., preparing materials, setting up equipment, supporting participants).

  • Assist with supply deliveries and coordinate with building service personnel.

  • Help maintain a safe and secure environment by conducting routine walkthroughs, monitoring security cameras, and following established protocols to alert staff or emergency services when necessary.

This task list is not intended to be exhaustive, and other tasks may be identified from time to time.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree with strong academic standing in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Community Development, Health Sciences).
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Word, Teams, Outlook).
  • Demonstrates kindness, professionalism, and respect for all individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, productive relationships across teams and with leadership.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in diverse environments.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as required.

CANADA SUMMER JOBS REQUIREMENTS

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old of age at the beginning of the employment period;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment; and;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
