Mechanical Design Engineer (Co-op)

Zaber Technologies is an employee-owned, precision motion control company based in Vancouver. We design and manufacture our products in-house, serving a wide variety of customers in photonics, life sciences, industrial automation, and semiconductor engineering. Your work at Zaber will give you an opportunity to work on systems and products that contribute directly to helping researchers and engineers around the world solve challenges across many domains.
As a self-motivated Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student on our Sustaining Engineering team, you will be responsible for managing the rollout of production-ready changes and coordinating improvements across Zaber’s diverse product portfolio. The goal of Sustaining Engineering at Zaber is to continuously improve our stages, ensuring our devices are intuitive, reliable and remain as our customer’s favourite motion control solution. You will tackle challenges ranging from design improvements for volume manufacturing, part performance optimizations, through to leading and managing large projects and change releases.
As part of a collaborative R&D team, you will get a chance to work with our mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to drive your projects forward and develop your skills. To help implement and prototype your ideas, you will have full access to our well-equipped machine shop, which includes a waterjet, laser cutters, lathes, mills (both manual and CNC), and numerous other precision metrology tools.
As a Mechanical Engineering Co-op, you will:
- Assess and improve manufacturing efficiencies to optimize existing Zaber products for production
- Design, manufacture, and evaluate new mechanical components, fixtures, and electro-mechanical device prototypes.
- Take ownership of tasks from the conceptual stage through to launch. You will coordinate project timelines, manage resources, and ensure successful delivery of your product changes.
- Coordinate and interact with stakeholders across Marketing, Production, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering to implement new processes and product improvements.
Mechanical Engineering Co-op Desired Qualities
- Passion for mechanical systems and hands-on experience (experience with precision equipment an asset).
- Experience designing mechanical parts and assemblies using Solidworks
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to self-manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Machine shop experience an asset.
- Currently enrolled in a degree or diploma program.
Mechanical Engineer Wage
- Wage: The starting wage for the role is $24 - $28/hour depending on experience.
- Closing Date: May 15, 2026
- Start Date: September 2026
- Length of position: 8 months preferred
- Team: Sustaining Engineering Team
