Job Duties

The School of Transportation at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is looking for a Lab Technologist for the Heavy Equipment Truck & Transport (HETT) Lab. You will help prepare materials for scheduled class exercises, assist Instructors in conducting hands-on learning activities, and support applied research projects utilizing the facility. The successful candidate will be engaged in inventory management and purchasing and will be engaged in regular performance checks and overseeing repairs of equipment. If you have an Interprovincial journeyperson Certificate in the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, Truck & Transport Mechanic, Automotive Service Technician, Agricultural Equipment Technician, Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) or Welder trade., three years of experience, and a passion for Heavy Equipment, Truck & Transport, and research innovation, please apply!

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Heavy Equipment Truck & Transport (HETT) Lab at the Saskatoon Campus.

  • Assist instructors in preparing materials and equipment used in the facility and support the instructor during hands-on exercise delivery.

  • May assist research personnel with the Sustainability-Led Integrated Centres of Excellence (SLICE) and other applied research areas with preparation of materials and equipment used in applied research projects and provide support for research staff during project activities.

  • Ensure that lab tools and equipment are maintained in serviceable condition. Arrange for major repair of lab equipment if required. Coordinate replacement and/or repair of damaged or broken tools and equipment.

  • Demonstrate equipment operation to new research staff and trainees engaged in applied research projects, as needed, and act as a resource for project personnel when required.

  • Ensure the safety and security of the facility and that equipment meets all safety regulations and compliance.

  • Receive, store, and dispense lab consumable items in consultation with the shipping and receiving department and follow shipping and receiving procedures.

  • Provide research and recommendations related to purchasing supplies and equipment.

  • Coordinate and initiate purchasing of approved lab supplies and equipment.

  • Keep an up-to-date inventory record and maintenance scheduling system for lab equipment.

  • Prepare documentation concerning general facility operations and procedures.

  • Contribute to creating a positive, diverse, inclusive work and learning environment.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA)

  • Interprovincial journeyperson Certificate in the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, Truck & Transport Mechanic, Automotive Service Technician, Agricultural Equipment Technician, Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) or Welder trade.

  • Three years of recent/relevant experience in heavy equipment and truck and transport operation and repair, including overhead crane operation, and a Class 1A driver’s license or similar operating experience with semis.

  • Must attain forklift certification within three months of hiring.

  • Experience with program-relevant software and equipment and their integration.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills including planning, scheduling, and prioritizing workloads in a dynamic environment.

  • Strong data and records management skills with a digital focus.

  • Effective problem-solving skills with strict attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated competence and recent experience in the use of the internet, e-mail, MS Office Suite software, familiarity with learning management systems, and the ability to learn and adapt to changing technology.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic team environment and build strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
