Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

This position provides service to customers, sorts and stocks incoming product, and assists in the ongoing retail operations of a Thrift Store. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.

This position is located at 563 Highland Road West, Kitchener, ON, N2M 5K2.

Accountabilities Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.

  • Provide courteous and efficient customer and donor service, addressing inquiries in person and by phone, and promoting sales through product knowledge and upselling techniques.
  • Maintain merchandise flow by replenishing stock, assisting with inventory control, and preparing unsold items for recycling when appropriate.
  • Support store presentation through visual merchandising, display setup, and regular upkeep of a clean and organized sales floor.
  • Follow established opening, closing, and security procedures, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the store.
  • Accurately process sales transactions using cash, debit, and credit, while adhering to policies on refunds, voids, and item holds.
  • Receive and sort donations, ensuring proper handling, pricing, and storage in line with quality and safety standards as directed.
  • Represent the organization in a respectful and professional manner, reflecting the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Critical Relationship Management Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, staff, and volunteers.

External: donors, vendors, contractors, clients of ministry unit in person.

Managerial Responsibilities Reports directly to the Store Manager.

Financial And Materials Management

  • Expected to exercise sound judgment in the use of organizational and personal resources.
  • Responsibilities for safe stock handling.
  • May process sales transactions using cash, debit, and credit, while adhering to policies on refunds, voids, and item holds.

Working Conditions This is a permanent part time position.

  • Work is typically performed in a store environment with exposure to monotony of work (repetitive tasks).
  • Work schedule may vary from week to week and may include different shifts and weekdays/weekends.
  • The work requires frequent amount of standing, walking, bending, repetitive lifting, and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs.

All Salvation Army NRO employees are required to wear safety shoes at all times in all Store and DRC locations.

Education And Experience Qualifications Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of some High School.

Experience And Knowledge Requirements

  • Up to 3 months of related experience.
  • An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Skills And Capabilities

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise care and responsibility in handling Salvation Army property and assets.
  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Good organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Self-directed, reliable, and able to take initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism, with sound judgment and balanced flexibility.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.82 to $17.82 with a maximum of $17.82.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
