The City of Victoria is offering a temporary student position to support our Engineering Underground Utilities Division. Key duties of the position include the following:

  • Participate in the collection of field data for engineering projects; operate various manual and electronic equipment such as survey levels, sewer and drain depth recorders.

  • Assisting the stormwater management team with duties related to the stormwater utility and the City’s green stormwater infrastructure program.

  • Update computer files and records from source data and prepare statistical reports.

  • Assist in the production and updating of related engineering drawings and maps.

  • Conduct preliminary investigations regarding sewer odours, water leaks, and flooding conditions.

  • Assist with collecting of water quality samples in freshwater and marine environments; provide support with environmental spills response.

  • Respond to general enquiries from the public and staff.

  • Operate a vehicle to transport equipment and supplies.

POSITION FUNCTION
As a student hired under the Co-operative Educational Training Program, you will be given meaningful and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. In this Co-op position you will assist with supernumerary projects and contribute to the overall goals of the work unit.

KEY DUTIES
Under the direct guidance and observation of the supervisor, assist with the on-going enhancement of the City’s operations by utilizing existing tools and software platforms.

Participate in the development and improvement of future-focused projects that align with the department’s strategic goals and objectives by providing supernumerary field or office support.

Conduct and document research, analyze and interpret data, prepare summary of findings, draft reports, procedures and/or practices, and present to supervisor for feedback and/or next steps.

Assist with identifying and testing new and/or enhanced tools and processes and collaborate to ensure ‘shared learning’.

INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.
Problems are referred to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High School.
Enrolled in a recognized Co-operative Education Program at a Canadian Post-Secondary Institution.
Currently attending full-time education and returning to full-time studies in the subsequent academic year.
In good standing in an Undergraduate Degree Program or Technical School Diploma Program.
