Job Description Position Purpose summary: This position provides required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service as well as minor maintenance and other miscellaneous position related duties ensuring the building and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner.
Accountabilities The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar duties to the listed below:
Service Responsibilities
- Responsible for any combination of lighting duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit.
- Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage and recycling receptacles, take garbage to apartment garbage room as needed, swap out recycling and composite bins when emptied, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
- Weekly garbage dump to the landfill is required
- Always ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, freezer and refrigerator; Check the kitchen fridge and discard expired, not labeled, spoiled food once a week.
- Keep track of fridge and freezer logs
- Always ensure washrooms cleanliness, clean toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required.
- Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles, and checks, cleans, moves, arranges, and dusts furniture as required.
- Vacuum and tidy sanctuary on a weekly basis and after special events, ensure the sanctuary is ready for Sunday Worship Service
- Spot wash accessible walls, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
- Performs more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during non-peak programming periods.
- Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required.
- Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s) and on janitorial carts.
- Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), wall parch-painting, light furniture fixing (tighten screws) reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up.
- May include set up and tear down for programing events.
- Grass & Lawn Maintenance: Cutting, trimming, and edging grass around walkways, flower beds, and walls using mowers, tractors, and weed eaters.
- Grounds Cleaning: Raking leaves, clearing trash/debris, sweeping walkways, and cleaning up grass clippings to maintain a sharp appearance.
- Equipment Operation: Operating and maintaining machinery such as power mowers, blowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and snowblowers.
- Property Upkeep: Watering lawns and plants, pruning trees/shrubs, and maintaining irrigation systems.
- Seasonal Tasks: Removing snow and ice from walkways and entrances in winter or performing other maintenance duties as directed.
Health & Safety
- Contribute to the safety of staff, guests, customers, and clients (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the building, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up etc.)
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Working Conditions Perform other related duties as required.
- This is a regular full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and designated properties
- The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 40 pounds
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
- Handles garbage and cleans up human waste and biohazard substances.
- Oduor’s, exposure to toxic chemicals, electrical hazards, and infectious diseases.
- Works in various weather conditions when working outdoors.
N ormal hours of work: Schedule may vary according to operational requirements; flexibility is required; may include split shifts, day, afternoon, and evening shifts, Monday through Saturday and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable. The supervisor will set the work schedule in consultation with the incumbent.

- Completion of Secondary School
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
Experience And Knowledge Requirements
- Up to one (1) year of prior related experience including life skills, custodial, and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
- Current WHMIS certificate or willingness to obtain.
Skills And Capabilities Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Represent The Salvation Army in a professional, positive, and engaging manner.

- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
