We are seeking a Maintenance Coordinator with strong expertise in hazardous and non-hazardous waste management within Alberta’s regulatory environment.

This role blends contract administration with technical waste knowledge, ensuring all service providers operate in full compliance with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA), the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in Alberta hazardous/non-hazardous waste management operations
  • 2+ years experience in contract management, vendor oversight, or procurement
  • Diploma or degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Technology, Waste Management, Supply Chain, or related fields
  • WHMIS 2015
  • CET designation through ASET
  • SWANA or CHMM certifications
  • Oilfield Waste Management training (AER Directive 058 familiarity)
  • Experience with Alberta landfills, treatment facilities, or oilfield waste handlers strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with municipal or industrial road maintenance (grading, dust control, gravel, culverts, winter road management) considered an asset
  • Experience in Alberta’s oil & gas, industrial operations, or municipal public works is beneficial
  • Civil maintenance experience would be considered an asset
  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta regulations (AEPA, AER, EPEA, Waste Control Regulation)
  • Ability to interpret contracts, technical waste profiles, and regulatory documentation

Responsibilities

  • Manage the full lifecycle of waste management contracts (hazardous, non-hazardous, sludge, construction waste, recycling, used oil, solvents etc.) at the Suncor Fort Hills site
  • Support RFP processes, contract evaluation, and development of site-specific scopes of work
  • Monitor invoice accuracy, disposal fees, transportation charges, and ensure tracking aligns with Alberta waste-disposal facility rules
  • Maintain relationships with approved Alberta waste-management vendors, carriers, and disposal facilities (landfills, Class I/II sites, treatment facilities)
  • Oversee Industrial Waste, review and verify waste profiles, codes, and manifests used at Alberta facilities
  • Ensure all waste handling complies with Alberta Waste Control Regulation, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), AER Directives, OHS Code & WHMIS and Federal TDG regulations
  • Participate in internal/external audits, supplier audits, and compliance reviews
  • Maintain detailed records for AER, corporate auditing, and potential inspections
  • Support waste-reduction initiatives such as recycling, reuse, and on-site treatment where allowed
  • Assist in environmental incident response related to spills, improper waste storage, or non-compliant disposal activities

Location and Other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our camp-based Fort Hills mining site, located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • The shift schedule is a seven days on/seven days off rotation, 12-hour shifts
  • This position is safety sensitive
