Reporting to the Director, Curriculum Development, the Team Lead, Culture and Heritage works collaboratively with the Director, Curriculum Development and the other Team Leads to ensure that any department projects relating to curriculum development, adaptation, review, revision and replacement for the entire Nunavut school system for K-12 are reflective of Inuit Culture and identify and reflect the needs of Nunavut’s predominately Inuit student population. The Team Lead will ensure the development of curricula respects the cultural foundation in Nunavut and is in keeping with the Nunavut Agreement and the department’s responsibilities found within the Education and Inuit Language Protection Acts . This involves working with Elder’s community members with specific expertise in these areas, coordinating with or participating in a working group of educators and with other Curriculum Development staff with specific projects and curriculum initiatives related to these fields of expertise.

The Team Lead, Culture and Heritage will assist the Director, Curriculum Development in the review of proposals received by the department by third parties as well as with the review of locally developed programs. The incumbent in this position will also assist with the preparation of briefing notes, response letters to inquiries, Minister’s Speaking Notes, Financial Management Board submissions, Business Cases and Press Releases in cooperation with the Director, Curriculum Development, Assistant Deputy Minister, Education and the Minister’s staff.

This position has two (2) direct reports: Curriculum Coordinators. Supervisory duties include directly assigning work, assessing employee performance, and dealing with performance issues which may arise. To successfully fulfill these duties, the Team Lead, Culture and Heritage will have the abilities to manage programs and/or project budgets, be proficient with computers and office 365 applications (i.e., File Maker Pro, Excel, Word, Outlook etc.), excellent oral and written communication skills, and work independently with strong time management skills.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a bachelor’s degree in education with a major in a related subject. Must be eligible for a Nunavut Teaching Certificate. Three (3) years of experience writing or adapting curriculum. Equivalencies would include five (5) years of experience working within the education system (departmental, regional or school), in depth knowledge of IQ and the Inuit worldview, and significant life experience instructing or co-instructing youth students and adults in areas directly related to Inuit culture and heritage. Fluency in an Inuit Language and English or French is required. A master’s degree in curriculum or a related subject would be considered an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
